The cultural heritage of Liverpool

Musalova D.D.

Liverpool is a large city located in the north-western part of Britain, it is also the second largest export port of the country. The core of the urban architecture of Liverpool are the buildings built in the late 18th century, which are of considerable interest to those who are interested in Victorian England. Liverpool is very popular with football fans, because here is one of the most famous football stadiums in the world. But the main reason why you can see tourists from all over the world on the streets of Liverpool is not architecture, not football and not attractions, but the fact that it is the homeland of the legendary band The Beatles. It was here that four talented musicians grew up, studied and gave their first concerts, creating one of the most popular rock bands in the world. On the streets of Liverpool there are many places associated with the history of the Beatles, such as, for example, the Cavern club or The Grapes pub. In addition, Liverpool is the largest and oldest Chinese quarter in Europe. A symbol of the city is the building of the Royal Liver Building, on top of which proudly the largest watches in England, equipped with spectacular backlight.

The first settlement on the territory of modern Liverpool was called Liuerpul, which meant "muddy pond". In historical documents, this settlement was first mentioned in 1190. Until the 17th century, Liverpool was just a small urbantype village, whose population did not reach even a thousand people. Then the city began to grow a little, mainly due to trade. In the next century, thanks to the growth of the slave trade, Liverpool has already turned into the largest trading port on the west coast. The 19th century for Liverpool meant an industrial revolution, as well as the opening of various financial institutions, the most important of which was the Liverpool Bank, which has functioned successfully to this day. In the middle of the XIX century the population of the city grew rapidly due to arriving immigrants, mostly from Ireland. By 1851, Irish settlers accounted for almost a quarter of the population of Liverpool. Officially, the status of the city of Liverpool was received only in 1880. In the following years, the city actively developed industry and shipbuilding.

In the Liverpool Docks Albert Dock is the most popular museum in the city - the Museum of the History of the Beatles. Visitors of this museum have the opportunity to learn many interesting details about the birth and development of the legendary musical collective. In the museum you can also see the concert costumes of the band members, their musical instruments, various archival materials and much more. The museum has a gift shop. Particularly zealous fans of the Beatles group should also visit the house-museum, in which John Lennon once lived.
