For most of the western research the division into climate attitudes is related to the political affiliation, however as McCright et al. (2016) stated climate change has been an issue of lower attention in countries of former Soviet Union, than it was in western countries like USA, Canada and Australia and this political division is also low. Authors claim that Political mobilization is less likely to occur on issues of low salience” and this is clearly seen on the example of Russian case.

Conclusion

Discussion taking place in posts of news broadcasters in the biggest Russian social network is not vast. There aren't many posts and comments present. The topic of climate change is not of an interest for most of the users. Literature explaining this as other focus of attention of general public, such as economic problems and the findings support this idea. However, the relation of income and climate position is not possible to elaborate due to some methods and data limitations. Those who participate in the discussion show different types of attitudes and, meanwhile, general attitudes are similar to those found in the research on western data, some variations are present. Beneficial attitude found in comments of Russian users was not present in the literature and previous research on the attitudes and stances of other countries as well as Belief attitude, that was represented by only 3% of the comments, but introduced previously not detected position on climate change.

Some communities of news broadcasters encouraged even disconnected attitude to be expressed, which is mostly expected to be found via interviews and surveys. Personal experience was one of the most frequent justifications for position taken among users and climate change is mostly understood as weather related issue.

Current research has some limitations that does not allow to make inferences about factors that are related to attitudes formation. Further research is needed and survey developed from this work findings will make a great implementation for the understanding the insight of climate change communication in Russia.

Notes

1. In the present research terms Climate Change and Global Warming are used in the same context. It should be noted that sample includes wider range of issues
