The paper analyzes the role of the theory of functional equivalence in the translation of animal characters. The Book of songs and poems called Shijin translated by A. A. Shtukin was the material for analysis. Shijin is the earliest collection of folk songs and poems of various genres in Chinese history. Many characters of animals have been created in Shijin, in which information about the rich traditional culture of China is encrypted. The scientific novelty of this work is in the analysis of methods for translating animal characters in Shijin from the point of view of the theory of functional equivalence. The paper basically summarizes three translation methods: literal translation, the method for adding a comment, and the replacement method. In the future, the results of the analysis may be useful in the practice of translating more Chinese poems.
