Metadata integration tool for open educational resources

Metadata - an organized information which defines, explains and facilitate easy retrieval and management information resources. Web technologies like a mechanism that contributes to the growth rate of implementation of electronic learning platforms.

Finally this research effort explored the prospect of combining metadata integration and metadata analysis practices to give a more real support of structured metadata for OERs. The integration method helped improve the interpretability of metadata analysis and enrichment of OER metadata. To achieve this, schema matching approaches to metadata integration were tinkered with to derive a new OER metadata template. This helped to address semantic challenges concerning the content and meaning of OER metadata elements.

In sum, this toolkit is constructed on a three-step metadata schema matching method, comprising pre-integration, schemas comparison and merging stages. The pre-integration set rules for integrating schemas; these schemas are further analyzed to study the correspondent elements; and lastly, the metadata schemas are merged to present an integrated metadata schema. Feature analysis highlighting null count, pattern, primary user, educational use, etc. was conducted on the resultant metadata to understand inherent properties of OERs.

The objectives set out for this research was realised to reasonable degree. Thus, future endeavor will look at a broad-base metadata integration approach that will capture other educational platforms excluded in work and accommodate more quality parameters.

Therefore, future research efforts would focus on broadening the scope by implementing computational algorithms, for example, elastic search, citation chain, and automatic indexing, etc. Combined, these computational techniques would improve the outcome of research work.
