Isaac Levitan (1860 -1900) was born in the town of Suwalki province Kybartai in Lithuania, in educated and impoverished Jewish family. In 13 years, Isaac was taken to Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture to class of A. Savrasov and V. Polenov. From the beginning of study Levitan earned money for life with lessons and custom portraits. He brilliantly graduated from college, but because of his origin he was awarded a diploma of the teacher of penmanship. levitan spring culture silver
System of spiritual life, which was formed and showed unusually results in the end of XIX - beginning XX centuries., often referred by romantic term "The Silver Century", that is a new stage in the development of Russian culture , since the reform of 1861 to the October Revolution of 1917 , called "The Silver Century". "The Silver Century" takes a special place in Russian culture. This contradictory time of spiritual quest and walks has considerably enriched all kinds of arts and philosophy, also it has given rise to a whole galaxy of outstanding creative personalities. At the doorstep of the new century the deep foundations of life began to change, also they generate the collapse of the old world picture.

Levitan, who brilliantly owned effects of plein air letters, with continue of the lyrical direction in the landscape came to Impressionism and was the creator of "the conceptual landscape" or "mood landscapes", which is inherent in a rich range of experiences, from joyful elation to philosophical reflection on the impermanence of all earthly . None of the artists could not express the nature of central Russia so fully as Isaac Levitan. Exactly, Russian nature is the main theme of many Levitan's paintings . Almost none of the artists before Levitan did not show a deep fascination lurking in the simplicity of the Russian landscape, greatness expanses of Russia, the hidden power of our soft, sometimes as if shaded colors, the pictorial most ordinary things. By peering into the picture Levitan, we find ourselves on the fact that written this excellent artist, we have seen many times around us, but do not remember. All this slipped past us like landscape outside the windows of the car. Levitan's power in next : he forces us to look into the nature and gives us his love for his homeland. When Levitan was alive, it was made to seek and find in his works various shades of sadness, grief, and even discouragement. It was a sad time. It tried to paint everything around in its color. Levitan's discouragement is the deepest untruth. How can you call, that artist is sad, who revealed all the richness of colors of Russian nature in all their continuous variation ?! How can we talk about the sadness of the artist, whose paintings are impregnated to the last thread on canvas with love for his country ?! Sadness was not and is not. But sometimes, when we see paintings of Levitan we have a perfectly legitimate regret that we can not now, at this moment, immediately go back to the places that are depicted on the canvas. This is not sad, it's quite different - effective, lively, productive, all the familiar feeling that we call grief only because it can not precisely defined.
Isaac Levitan's canvas "The spring. The big water "was written in 1897 and is one of the most important works of the artist. There is the canvas “ The spring. The big water” in Moscow at the Tretyakov Gallery, its size is 64.2 by 57.5 cm, oil on canvas. On the canvas we see the river at the time of the flood, when water flooded coastal areas - birch groves, fields, part of the village. In the calm and motionless river, as in a mirror, hesitating, reflected spring blue sky, thin bare trunks and branches of trees. In the foreground - the forgotten boat, but somewhere very far is located the high shore with modest wooden houses and several buildings flooded village. Skillfully written by Levitan narrow strip of yellow and red beach - beautiful curving, he takes the viewer deep into the picture. Every elegant and vibrantly-curved tree written by the artist with love and admiration. Like a living, moving and trustingly birches expect something good that will bring to them spring. Admiring stretching up thin birch trees and aspens, ringing high sky with wispy clouds, as dissolved in the light of a bright sunny day. The landscape is filled with bright, pure colors of the spring of Russian nature. Coloring fabric formed by subtle color shades: blue, green and yellow. The blue color is the most diverse, Levitan selected a variety of shades from milky white to dark blue for the image of the sky and water. The trunks of the yellow birches and their slightly trembling reflection in the water give to picture timidity and "air". Work of Levitan "The spring. The canvas talks about spring resurrection of nature and a large bright joy comes from it, filling us with optimism, serenity and a desire to live. Just remember inspires freshness in the air, which usually is felt in the spring! Master did not miss anything, even drawing shadows on the water surface. It is formed as a dark, vague shadows, reflections and amber trees. Isaac Levitan is not for nothing is the greatest artist. He was able to show the harmony, the beauty of the simple things around us.
