Semiotics of referenses' influence on contemporary artist's identity: the case of A. Hmiliar

Tombulatova I.I., Odesa National University named after I. I. Mechnikov

Introduction

Any artist's identity is characterized, first of all, by originality and complexity, especially while dwelling on the identity of a contemporary artist. The hybridity of the construction of the artist's identity can be influenced by different factors, for instance, the variety of experience: emotional, cultural, social, professional, ethnical, family, upbringing style, sexual, subcultural, lifestyle etc.

Actually, a fleeting memory, a passing interest to something, any insignificant event, meeting or quick small-talk can make an impact on artist's imagination not to mention something really important in the life of a person that can shape the personality of an artist.

One of the most important factors which can influence artist's identity is his cultural and educational-professional experience, as the elements of artists' styles, manners, even images or plots he admires or respects can easily emerge in his own creative work. That is how one's artist creative practice can become the dialogue between not only creative personalities, but between different cultural epochs, national originalities, generations, build bridges for people, who are so distant in time and vary a lot in lifestyles.

Throughout life an artist can be interested in numerous issues, that is why the public and researchers can find and trace some of the motives or features in different periods of individual's creative work. Moreover, as identity is influenced by various factors it can be a number of events of different types, wide range of artists (and, of course, it can occur that they may represent not only fine arts universe, but music, theatre, dance, sculpture, cinema and, obviously, literature plots or philosophical theories; these arts' tools, techniques, characters and images can happen to take their own place in someone's creative artifacts).

Analyzing contemporary artist's identity sometimes it must be noted that the public can witness a special game strategy implemented by the artist in his masterpiece or in a series of his works.

The main body

This short research is dedicated to the part of the exhibition “Transition” (Ukraine, Odesa, 2021), which was a debut one of Ukrainian artist A. Hmiliar.

The idea of the exhibition was to dive into artist's experience that somewhat changed his everyday life, mindset and creative practice. Scrolling through the pages of memory, the project represented some bright spots of the experience of an artist, which influenced him and his works directly. The majority of exhibits were connected with a cultural experience of the individual. The purpose of the research is to highlight some pivotal features of the artists' style, concepts and techniques, which were plainly formed due to the reference-like flow of artistic life.

Generally, according to the art experience of A. Hmiliar those references may be divided as the ones connected with: fine arts, music, cinema, performative art / theatre and, evidently, literature. Here the most influential personalities were Jean- Michel Basquiat, Dante, Nicolas Jaar, Sergii Parajanov, and the others.

In fact, the article focuses on the features, which the artist mentions in his visual texts occasionally. They will be traced in his tree paintings taken from the “Transition” universe. Some of them can be called even typical images/symbols of his creative practice of this period. The first key-painting of the analyzed set is “This isn't Scottie Pippin” (2020). Actually, this is originally done painting, which resembles one of the photos of J.-M. Basquiat, that shows him while creating (Fig. 1).

J. M. Basquiat is one of the important artists for A. Hmiliar and it can be seen even in some features of the manner and style of the artist. The author creates his own “visual vocabulary of personally resonant signs, symbols, and figures, and his art developed rapidly in scale, scope and ambition as he moved from the street to the gallery” [1], as in our case the art of Ukrainian artist first moved from the walls of popular local bars (Silence espresso bar, Brik, Hedonist), where he decorated the space to the museum topos and later from Odesa to Berlin, where he was a participant of several exhibitions during his first year there.

As well, his “works mixed together many different styles and techniques. His paintings often included words and texts, his graffiti was expressive and often abstract (...). Despite his work's “unstudied” appearance, he very skillfully and purposefully brought together a host of desperate traditions, practices, and styles to create his signature visual collage” [1] - consequently, J.-M Basquiat can be called A. Hmiliar's great impression and “mentor” in art. As Alison Bain states in her research under the title “Constructing an artistic identity”: “In contemporary Western culture artists are idealized as members of what Simpson has termed `a “sacred” profession'” [2, P. 29]. In case of A. Hmiliar an American genius can be even called a kind of “a helpful Doppelganger”. That is why, surely, his first exhibition reflected it in an exact piece of art and in artistic manner of some other paintings.

Another example of reference is the painting “Muse” (Fig. 2). Here can be seen the author's version of S. Parajanov's universe, that was presented in his movie “The Color of Pomegranates” (1969). This is the variant of the shot from the movie that shows the Muse (one of the main characters of the movie).

Still, the movie shot didn't contain all the symbols, which A. Hmiliar managed to combine in this picture. All of these objects are symbolic and, moreover, became pivotal and typical in A. Hmiliar's paintings of the creative period (2020-2021) before leaving Ukraine at the beginning of the 2022. For instance, the pomegranates can be found as the main images/symbols of the painting “Still Death” (2020) and may be seen as important artistic details of “Theatre” (2020), which were exhibited during

“Transition” exhibition as well. And all of this prove the existence of S. Parajanov's influence on the art universe of A. Hmiliar.

Fig. 2

This one proves also that some of A. Hmilair's works resemble J.-M. Basquiat masterpieces as we can see here a really collage-like structure of the painting, while analyzing the architecture of it.

Pomegranates are important for S. Parajanov's universe as they represent Armenian identity, the identity of the main character of the movie - ancient Armenian poet Sayat-Nova. The motive of identity is one of the basic for this artefact. That is not just a copy from the movie enriched with the symbolic details. The art of such type is always the conversation of masters and

their identities, constructed by plenty of parts, details, signs and influenced by a great many of factors. In this exact case the exploring of the picture can prove the intersection of various arts (fine art, cinema, literature and music, so on), national backgrounds (Armenian, Georgian and Ukrainian), furthermore - here can be seen the combination of different artistic styles and creative methods of two personalities. Turning back to pomegranates, they are pivotal in this exact painting as they represent the identity of Sayat-Nova, Armenian poet, who is the main character of S. Parajanov movie. Thus, his Muse as the representation of spirit of his creative practice is depicted, surrounded by different symbols. Pomegranates are connected also with the flourishing period of life, with the harvest period in life, the birth of something new and the wonder of birth itself, which is always associated with the inspiration that any muse gives.

In fact, another important image of the painting is the book. It is equally the main symbol in the movie and on the canvas. This is connected with the spiritual origin either, with the knowledge and experience of the generations. It also was repeated in another painting “Still Death” (2020), so it can be said that this detail became a typical symbol for artist's creative work.

In addition, it is remarkable to study the way the face of the Muse is depicted. In the movie it is pale / powdered and is associated with a pure spirit, the inspiration and something immortal. A. Hmiliar draws the face colorful. Suppose, it means that the inspiration can be various in emotions and reasons and can be realized in a number of ways by means of plenty of manners, styles and in conclusion - creative artifacts.

This painting is actually connected with the canvas “You are here but you don't hear” (2020) (Fig. 3). It is the portrait of a famous musician and dj Nicolas Jaar. There are no symbols related to the motif of the fore mentioned works but one of his projects was dedicated to the movie “The Color of Pomegranate”, as a composer he created a kind of soundtrack to the movie, that, in fact, was realized in 2015 under the title “Pomegranates”. As all of the artefacts were made during a year it must be noted that they could be influenced by some great impression of the movie and the music, still what was the first really doesn't matter as the paintings deal with the all of the art's masterpieces and create a kind of the universe of A. Hmiliar's range of artefacts going back to this creative period in Odesa.

Another typical feature of this period is that all the portraits of the real people don't have any face details as far as the personages have them depicted. The “world” here is turned upside down: the real faces stay invisible and make enigma, but the virtual reality comes through the paintings into the reality and is introduced to the public in all its splendor.

Conclusion

reference artist hmiliar

Summing up, even in this short research it can be seen that reference is quite important for artists' universes as it can change or in some way construct the sign system of the artefacts, influence artists' “languages”, no matter where this artist lives or which generation he represents.

Due to this article it can be seen that other personalities and their creative experience interact in a different artistic universe (manner, characters, textures, symbols, tools etc.).

In a presented case we proved that the personalities from different areas of art (music, cinema and fine arts) made a great impact on the creative works of Ukrainian artist A. Hmiliar and he even decided to dedicate his first personal exhibition “Transition” to the most memorable moments, images and mentors in his life.
