RESUME

Apalat H.P. Structure, Semantics and Pragmatics of Interview Texts in Modern English Press. - Manuscript.

A thesis for the Scholarly Degree of Candidate of Philology in speciality 10.02.04 - Germanic Languages. - Kyiv National Linguistic University, Kyiv, 2003.

This dissertation highlights the structural, semantic and pragmatic peculiarities of interviews in modern English press. On the basis of the press data research, this paper investigates discourse characteristics of the interview. Interview texts belong to argumentative discourse. Interview argumentative texts are viewed as critical discussions with implicit launching (opening) and conclusion stages as well as explicit confrontation and argumentative stages. This research suggests that some segments of interviews are pseudo-argumentative. Interview texts are examined as institutional discourse, which exhibits institutional and conversational features.

Interview form and content make it possible to single out the central and peripheral semantic zones. The centre comprises the part of the text representing the conversation of the interviewer and the interviewee. The periphery includes additional information about the interview time and place, the interviewer and his/her attitude towards the interviewee or subject of the discussion, additional information of the subject of the interview received from other sources. Semantic peculiarities of the texts enable the classification of informative interviews, opinion interviews and mixed interviews. The problem interview and the portrait interview are considered subtypes.

Journalistic interview is regarded as a hybrid secondary text possessing the features of a report. The paper suggests the prototype model of interview, which combines functional and structural parameters.

The variation of functional and structural parameters of interviews reflects the processes of infiltration, contamination, amalgamation and accommodation of interview and report.

In infiltrative texts the elements of report penetrate into the interview. The report elements are located in the secondary title and the leads comprising information about the interviewee, the interview time and place. The main part of the text has the form of a dialogue. Contaminative texts contain more report elements that are located in the leads. The main part of the text preserves the dialogical character. Amalgamative texts are characterized by the fusion of elements of interview and report. The dialogical form of presentation is not typical of amalgamative texts. The information about the main content of the interviewer and the interviewee's conversation merges the additional information of the subject of the interview, the interviewee etc. Accommodative interview texts are considered the closest to the report texts. The analysed texts embrace the information received from different sources. The information received throughout the interview with some person(s) is rudimental.

In the thesis communicative strategies and tactics of the interviewer and the interviewee have been defined. The interviewer's tactics appear to be cooperative. Due to his/her communicative intentions the interviewer employs either a communicative strategy that reveals the opinion of the interviewee or his/her own views on the problem the respondent is asked to comment on.

The interviewee's tactics turn out to be cooperative and conflictive. He/she employs either the strategy of informing the interviewer or the strategy of demonstration his/her attitude towards the interlocutor's statement.

Key words: argumentative discourse, pseudo-argument, institutional discourse, script, secondary text, hybrid text, creolised text, communicative strategy, communicative tactics.
