Extract from a novel "Ragtime" by E.L. Doctorow

The text under analysis is an extract from a novel “Ragtime” by E. L. Doctorow. The extract started with the description of Coalhouse Walker's coming. The narrator began by describing the car and boy's reaction when he saw it, but he didn't introduce who was in the car. The only thing we happened to know was that he was a Negro. We can see the difference between the first sentences and last ones of the first paragraph. First sentences were simple ones, but when the narrator touches upon about “driver's” race and his car we felt a little tension. These two short sentences showed that it was unusual to have “shone car” for Negro at the time, may be that society was not ready for wealthy Negroes. Such was the coming of the Negro and the aim of his coming was to see a woman named Sarah.
The first coming of the colored man was, at first, strange. His wish to speak with Sarah, he asked it so tremulous and self-important but he seemed to be afraid of something. After we understood his fears. Sarah refused to talk with him. Getting acquainted with Sarah, it was hard to figure out who was the host and who took the place of the servant. She answered soft, rude for the servant and it was said in commander tone. The narrator highlights Sarah didn't tell anything to this family, so they knew nothing about her past and have no idea who was that colored man. Now let's pass on to colored man. He was described as well maintained, sensitive and prosperous person. Next it was black man's meeting with a child. This moment makes us sure that the man was serious and would not give up. The metaphor “in the warmth of the comer” proved us that he really wants to be with Sarah and his child. Mother was outraged finding the unknown guest in the kitchen. Firstly he was colored man and as we know at that time there was prepossession to Negroes. Secondly she met him for the first time and the most of us would react negatively seeing unknown man in a house. Coalhouse behaved very calm and polite. There was nothing in it, as he thought.
Only after that coming the narrator introduced us with the main character of this story. After inversion “such was the coming …” it became clear that Coalhouse made a real impression on this family by his visit. He came to talk to Sarah every weekend, every weekend he got refuse, but still he was very polite. Walker irritated Father, he had a typical view about negroes and thought that they do not deserve such things like to have tea with their family. Coalhouse left a bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums and they have cost him pretty penny. The narrator underlined the fact that in this season it had to have him pretty penny. This is another proof of his feelings, that he could do everything for her whatever it would cost him. Sarah deserves all the best.
Mother was not the last person in this story. She was that one who felt smth and decided to help this man. A moment when the family gave a dinner to Walker was the most interesting. Father noticed that Coalhouse suffered no embarrassment and it annoyed him. Especially the way he behaved as if he was not black. When Coalhouse was talking about his job there was a feeling that everything he was talking about was addressed to Sarah. Further Father suggested play smth and what was his reaction when Walker said that piano in need of tuning. It was like below the belt for Father. How negro dared to say him such thing? Coalhouse started to play and it was so beautiful, even Mother's Younger Brother came down to see who was playing. Coalhouse was continuing the play. It was a vigorous music, filled the stairwell and touches every place in space. It was played very professional, sensitive, with love, great feeling and emotions. The sentence “There was a silence” proved that everyone was inspired and impressed by Coalhouse's play and no one could be indifferent to this play. The extract titled “Ragtime”. What does it mean? Ragtime is the form of music in which the strong note of the tune comes just before the main beat. It should be mentioned that in the text some sentences are short and some of them are long. So the extract is a play named “Coalhouse's Rag”. And another thing that we couldn't overlook was absence of the direct speech. This absence makes the reader to absorb the book at a one sitting.
The main subject of the extract is social situation. A lot of people hold in supreme contempt to colored race. The main character was a hero of that time. He didn't pay attention at narrow-mindedness and it was right. He behaved always as a gentleman that as I think was hard to play it cool with a “royal white race”. I think the message of the extract was to show us that nothing is matter in our lives except the people we cherish. If you want something very much you should never give up but go the whole hog.
