The paper deals with the lexicographic description of Ukrainian hydroturbine term subsystem in electronic dictionary. The formation and development of computer lexicography in Ukraine and abroad are considered. The lines of research in modern Ukrainian computer lexicography are analyzed, and its development prospects are outlined. Theoretical studies of lexical unit description in paper and electronic dictionaries, performed by leading scientists, are surveyed.

Based on the vast research material the analysis of hydroturbine term subsystem, in particular its sources of formation, structure and system relations between terms, is performed. The structural and semantic characteristics of hydroturbine terms are given.

The hydroturbine term subsystem comprises special terms denoting the types, components and parameters of hydroturbine equipment and terms belonging to related fields namely machine building, electrical engineering, hydraulic engineering, civil construction etc. The special terms of compound structure form the major part of the analyzed term subsystem. The structural organization consists of the center and periphery, the first containing microfields “Hydroturbine types”, “Hydroturbine components” and “Hydroturbine parameters” and the second, “Hydroturbine manufacture” and “Hydroturbine operation”. Each microfield can by composed by term groups and subgroups which are formed on the basis of lingual and extra lingual criteria. Synonymic, antonymic, hyper-hyponymic and partonymic relations in these groups are revealed. The presence of limited number of synonyms and considerable number of antonyms is a salient feature of hydroturbine terminology.

The macrostructure composed of two frames (left frame containing alphabetical and lingual-encyclopedic lists of terms; and right frame, all dictionary entries) was selected for the computer dictionary. The frame denotes a finished HTML document which can be displayed in any Web browser together with other HTML documents. The content for the left and right frame has been defined so as to represent the structure and system of the hydroturbine terminology applying lingual and encyclopedic means of description.

The lingual-encyclopedic list represents the whole structure of the term subsystem. The dictionary also supports traditional way of term arrangement - alphabetical order, which is typical for the most of paper term dictionaries.

The right frame describes the headword in various aspects. Its structural elements are followed in predetermined order. The entry has six zones each one having a set of parameters necessary for lexicographic description of the term: 1) headword (information about pronunciation and synonyms); 2) grammar zone (flexion or full form of the headword in genitive case, singular and plural form, morphological or syntax characteristics of the headword); 3) definition zone (in some cases the definition can be accompanied by a short encyclopedic information of the object represented by the headword); 4) thematic zone (center or periphery, term group and subgroup which the headword belongs to); 5) system relation zone (indicating system relations of the headword with other terms: hyper-hyponymic, partonymic etc.); 6) translation zone (headword equivalents in English, Spanish and Russian; a geographical range of Spanish term usage is indicated); 7) graphical illustration zone (extra-lingual ways to describe the meaning of the headwords; for this purpose photos, figures, schemes and diagrams are applied). The computer dictionary is considered to be a new type of lexicographic product combining the elements of different paper dictionaries, namely explanatory, thesaurus, translation and encyclopedic dictionaries.

The electronic dictionary on hydroturbine terms is compiled on the hypertext principle which allows visualizing the structural organization of the whole hydroturbine term subsystem, the relations between terms in this subsystem. The hypertext also provides convenient and comprehensive search of the material in the dictionary, the results evidencing the inclusion of a term in topical and conceptual areas.
