R.K. Potapova, V.V. Potapov, A.V. Dzhunkovskiy
Abstract
In this paper we describe some practical possibilities of interdisciplinary application of the developed technology of deep annotation of polycode texts. The method of in-depth annotation itself is described, after which the technology of "analytical translation" based on this method is substantiated and described. 'Analytical translation" involves the multifaceted work of language students with a foreign text and differs from the classical translation by a great emphasis on the context of the communication situation. It is assumed and argued that such a method can be effective for teaching non-linguistic technical students.

Аннотация
polycode text annotation translation
Introduction
Previously we have put forward an innovative method of deep parametric polycode text annotation for multimodal Internet texts.
The processing of polycode data (including verbal text fragments, paraverbal manifestations of polycode speech, non-verbal parameters of movement and other gesture characteristics, extralinguistic factors) became the basis for a special method of certification (called annotation in the text) and led to the creation of a clear algorithm in the field of corpus linguistics.
The analysis of polycode multimodal texts within the framework of corpus linguistics makes it possible to move on to solving problems such as machine (automated) translation of foreign language texts into Russian in various fields of knowledge while taking into account the rapid informatization and digitalization of modern society. During annotation, polycode multimodal text was analyzed for a number of variables.
We posit that the use of this method in teaching foreign languages to students of technical specialties may be productive and in demand due to several factors.
Firstly, in the proposed approach to teaching a foreign language, the text is considered as a complex synthetic whole [Potapova, Potapov, Dzhunkovskiy, 2019], requiring sequential analysis for a number of predefined variables, which can be effective when teaching language disciplines to persons who are accustomed to working with clear logical structures.
Secondly, this approach involves working with multimodal, polycode foreign language texts, which in the modern world are becoming the prevailing method of transmitting information [Potapova, Potapov, Dzhunkovskiy, 2019]. Thus, the use of this approach in the foreign language instruction of technical specialists meets the needs of the modern labor market and implies the use of the latest information technologies.
Deep annotation technique for polycode multimodal texts
The analysis of texts in accordance with the developed annotation technique is based on a multilateral approach to the text as a whole. The annotation process implies the analysis of verbal, paraverbal, non-verbal and extraverbal variables associated with the polycode multimodal text under consideration.
In the course of this analysis, a number of variables are considered, which include those that contain information about the author of the text, such as name, age, gender, native language of the author, as well as their location.
In addition, information about the text is considered as part of the discourse. If the text is published in print media, it becomes possible to determine the date of publication, source, as well as the type of material. In cases where the text is published on the Internet, additional information becomes available for analysis: the number of subscribers to the resource or the author, statistics about a particular publication (how many times it has been viewed, commented on, liked), the duration of audio and video fragments included in the text.
Then the types of polycode text are determined. This annotation parameter is most relevant for digital text materials, which may contain text / images / audio / video materials and / or hyperlinks in any possible combination [Potapova R. et al., 2019].
If the annotated text contains video or images (figures, tables, illustrations, etc.), it becomes possible to analyze polycode signals, such as facial expressions, gestures, proxemics. This allows us to analyze the situation of communication as such: to determine the number, age, gender composition and social status of communicants, situations and topics of communication, types of communication, as well as the emotional-modal state of communicants.
The next stage in the analysis of the text is to determine its linguistic features: whether the text is addressed to a specific recipient or an undefined group of recipients; whether the speech of the communicants is prepared; whether it is possible to find in its composition words and phrases foreign for the author of the text; whether it has tonality, emotionality, intertextuality and temporality; what speech defects are exhibited by communicants and whether one of the types of polycode communication prevails over the rest.
Using the deep annotation technique as a tool for teaching foreign languages
The method of deep annotation described above allows one to consider multimodal polycode text as a complex whole consisting of a message as an object of information, a message as a linguistic unit, a communication situation, a surrounding discourse, and information about the author.
This approach to annotation is especially relevant in the modern world in connection with the spread of multimodal polycode messages on the Internet.
Despite the fact that the proposed approach can also be used to analyze traditional printed texts, it turns out to be the most effective when considering modern polycode multimodal texts on the Internet.
Due to the fact that modern linguodidactics pays relatively little attention to working with this category of texts, our proposed innovative method may be most in demand for teaching foreign languages to people who are most adapted and accustomed to working with just such texts.
This is also in line with modern government initiatives to digitize the Russian economy and has the advantage that it can be easily adapted for distance learning purposes due to the nature of the material being analyzed.
The essence of the method lies in the fact that during the translation of a foreign polycode multimodal text into Russian, its parallel analysis is carried out according to the criteria described above. In the course of translation, context plays an important role: our proposed method of “analytical translation” assumes a deep, consistent and systematic analysis of the context of the translated message, which in turn can be useful in terms of increasing the accuracy of translation.
We posit that the proposed approach to annotation will be most in demand for students of non-linguistic specialties, in particular technical ones. This hypothesis is connected with the fact that students of non- linguistic specialties often do not consider language as a system, which is inherent for linguists. The proposed method of “analytical translation” will allow non-linguists to better understand the structure of the language and the message as such, which, possibly, can lead to positive changes in the level of language proficiency and increase the speed of acquisition. In this case, complex information in a foreign language comes to the fore, taking into account the lexical, semantic-semantic and pragmatic features.
While using this method of analytical translation, students are to do the following:
1. Identify and decode the general situation of communication;
2. Determine the semantic focus and influence of the context on the understanding of the text;
3. Compare the information received in a foreign language with information in the native language;
4. Determine the role of each of the communicants with a focus on the lexical level of discourse;
5. Mentally compare a similar situation and its linguistic explication, comparing the information received in the target language;
6. Based on the knowledge gained, in the future, by analogy, use similar polycode models in the target language.
Conclusions
The article discusses the possibility of using the results of the development of a methodology for in-depth annotation of polycode texts as a language teching tool. The technique is based on deep annotation of multimodal polycode texts. The proposed method of “analytical translation” is based on simultaneous translation and analysis of verbal, paraverbal, extraverbal and non-verbal aspects of the text in-parallel. It is assumed that the use of this technique can be especially effective when working with multimodal polycode texts on the Internet.
Due to the fact that modern students are more and more immersed in the Internet environment, teaching students to use the proposed methods and materials meets the modern demands of the labor market and seems appropriate. The approach to translating foreign language texts proposed in the article may turn out to be more familiar to students of technical specialties in connection with its clearly structured logic and a given sequence of actions necessary to achieve a result.
The development of methodological materials with subsequent experimental verification of the effectiveness of the method can provide an answer to the question of the advisability of introducing the proposed method.
