Abstract

Although though there are certain differences in customs, civilizations, traditions, regions, and idiosyncrasies, the world has gotten smaller, more accessible, shareable, and familiar for all people living on this planet in the twenty-first century thanks to the usage of English as a common language. Although English shares many characteristics with other languages, it is widely used by people who speak thousands of different languages. The lives of people all over the world are changing drastically as a result of the advancement of science and technology. As a result, the entire world has transformed into a global village, and individuals must sustain positive relationships with one another. Moreover, business, trade, and commerce have expanded internationally, and the majority of corporate organizations have offices worldwide. English serves as a common language and a global language to maintain relationships between nations in science, technology, commerce, education, travel, tourism, and other fields. It is the primary language used by commercial organizations, the internet, scientists, as well as the higher education and tourism industries. Introduction

english language tourism

The importance of immediate and relevant ways of communication has been expanding extremely quickly in this contemporary era due to the ever-increasing levels of interconnectedness and globalization. It is evident that a common language is necessary for communication with the current expansion of global trade and commerce between businesses. It is clear that the majority of people around the world communicate with individuals in other regions using only one internationally recognized language, namely English, as a result of the development of both globalization and information technology. When a representative and a multinational firm communicate, English is nearly always the language of choice. Being the first world language, English is regarded as the first global lingua franca. It is also the most widely used language in the world for publishing newspapers and other books as well as for international trade, diplomacy, popular culture, international telecommunications, and scientific publications.

Since English is a lingua franca, the majority of native and non-native English speakers use it as their primary language of exchange in professional settings. Because it connects the East and the West, the North and the South, English has emerged as the language with the greatest rate of growth in the contemporary era. The English language is used in nearly every industry throughout the world, including science, engineering and technology, medical, trade and commerce, scientific research, education, tourism, the internet, banking, business, and advertising. Without a sure, English holds a special position because it is the language that is so widely used and so firmly entrenched as the dominant global language in the aforementioned fields, and its dominance has grown like a snowball that is impossible to stop.

As English has taken on such a significant role, several researchers have attempted to create a term by taking into account the different facets of the use of English in different contexts. It is referred to as "General English" by Ahulu (1977), "World Standard (Spoken) English" by McArthur (1987), "English as a Global Language" by David Crystal (1997), "English as a Lingua Franca" by House (1999), "English as a Lingua Franca" by Gnutzmann (2000), "English as a Seidlhofer (2001), and "English as a Jenkins (2007)," among others. Moreover, the phrases "English as an International Language" were coined by Widdowson (1997), Modiano (1999), Jenkins (2000), and Brutt-Griffler (2002), who also created the term "Global English". The phrases English as a global language, English as a lingua franca, and English as an international language are the most frequently used. Although if the vocabulary used to utilize these terms varies, they all roughly indicate the same thing, indicating that English is the most commonly spoken and used language in practically all key fields worldwide. It is appropriate to state in this regard that English merits the status of an international or global language in order to meet the demands of individuals who inhabit diverse regions of the world and speak various languages.

Despite the fact that English was once thought of as the language of the British, because to the historical efforts of the British Empire, it is now a second language in many former British colonies, including the US, Australia, Canada, Nigeria, South Africa, and India. But today, English has replaced other languages as the dominant tongue in the nations influenced by British colonization, as well as in the business, trade, and cultural arenas that these nations control. Without a doubt, English has been the preferred language in the fields of science and technology. Even the vast majority of Hollywood films and television shows are produced in English, as are most international publications. Also, it is the common tongue in the tourism industry and the language of scientific research.

Furthermore, as practically all publications in the fields of science, engineering, information technology, medical, tourism, business, and so forth are exclusively written in English, the majority of students who travel abroad to pursue their higher education should be able to communicate in English. In foreign nations, almost all courses are taught in English. Also, knowing English has become a need for anyone looking to work abroad or for any multinational corporation. Also, it is the primary language used in the news, online, and in electronic media. Just 85% of scientific journals are published in languages other than English. Despite the fact that English is the most widely spoken language in the world, Mandarin is only spoken in a small portion of the globe and English is spoken by the majority of people worldwide. Despite having the greatest number of speakers worldwide, Chinese people are now learning English in order to develop their businesses throughout the world.

The current e-business has been progressing and achieving good results in the sector of trade and commerce because it is primarily used on the internet. It is also the language spoken by some international organizations, including the UN, WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF, OPEC, EFTA, ASEAN, UNHRC, WTO, ILO, BRICS, and INTERPOL, in addition to diplomats. Only one-third of these worldwide organizations speak English exclusively, while 90% of Asian international organizations do too.

Due to the fact that different nationalities and regions of the world speak different languages, a universal language that is understood by the majority of people is necessary. Currently, English is the only language spoken by citizens of every nation on earth, making it the global language. It is spoken by more non-native speakers around the world even though it is the native tongue of the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. It also has official language status, which means that it is a language used in contacts between citizens and government officials, in about sixty countries. Nevertheless, it is not used as a main language in fifteen of those countries. Over fifty-four nations have adopted English as both their official language and the medium of instruction for higher education. Recent figures show that there are 27 non-sovereign entities and 55 sovereign governments where English is the official language. English has been designated as an official language at the regional or local level in a large number of country subdivisions as well. As a result, in order to serve the requirements of people everywhere, English has become a worldwide language.

English has evolved into a universal language despite being the first West Germanic tongue spoken in medieval England. In a number of nations, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and a few Caribbean countries, it has been the primary language for the majority of the population. It is spoken by more than 750 million people as a second language in addition to about 375 million people who speak it as their native language. Additionally, nearly 70 nations have official or special status for the English language. One may easily comprehend why English is such a significant worldwide language by looking at these figures. Giddens (2000) states, "Globalization is a separation of geography and time, with instantaneous communications, information and culture might be spread around the world concurrently". Globalization has mostly been seen as an economic phenomenon since it involves increased contact or integration of national economic systems through growth in trade, capital flows, and investment on a global scale. The term "globalization" is now used to refer to cross-border interactions in technology, politics, society, and culture, especially amongst individuals.

English is one of the official languages of 85% of international organizations, followed by Chinese and Russian, with less than 50% of those using French. Even a third of international organizations, such as OPEC, EFTA, and ASEAN, solely speak English, while 90% of international organizations in Asia do the same. 85% of multinational organizations worldwide utilize English as their official language in transnational communication, according to Crystal (1997). Around 90% of published academic articles in a variety of academic subjects, including linguistics, are written in English. Important cinema productions and markets around the world also employ English. The rising usage of English can frequently be linked to globalization in the fields of education, business, and culture.

Conclusion

In this essay, the significance of English as a world language has been thoroughly examined. Also, some statistical data has been provided as proof that English is the only language that is widely spoken and acknowledged around the world. First of all, it has been extensively debated how important English is in the sphere of science and technology. The significance of English in education has since been thoroughly studied. The situation of the global job market has since been extensively explored. Furthermore, it has been emphasized that English is used in commerce. So, it has been made evident how important it is for business companies to use English as their primary language of communication in order to maintain and grow their clientele.

Also, the influence of the English language on the internet has been discussed, and it has been established that a significant number of websites use English as their primary language of exchange. The significance of English in travel and tourism has now been further explained. Also, a thorough discussion on the value of English in the press and media has taken place. The usage of English by the Hollywood-based television, music, and film industries has also been highlighted in this analysis of the impact of English on entertainment. Even if some fields are left out, it appears that English also has a dominant role in those industries as well. The intriguing development in the twenty-first century is that several of the largest economies, including China, Japan, Russia, France, and Brazil, are putting more emphasis on the English language now that they are aware of its importance on a worldwide scale.
