Studying languages in the context of intercultural communication is a key factor in understanding and appreciating diverse cultural specifics. Language, unquestionably, serves not only as a communicative tool but also as a window that opens up the wide world of cultural, historical, and social peculiarities of various nations. Learning languages enables us not only to immerse ourselves in another cultural sphere but also to interact with its representatives on a deeper and more mutually comprehensible level. language social peculiarities
This topic not only sparks an interest in language learning but also unveils multifaceted opportunities for exploration. It encompasses aspects of intercultural communication, language barriers, cultural exchange, and the influence of language on relationships between different nationalities and ethnic groups.
In this context, language learning becomes not just an educational task but also a means of broadening one's horizons, enhancing tolerance, and understanding the cultural diversity of our world. In the following sections, we will explore various facets of studying languages in the context of intercultural communication and their impact on our society and individual development.
At the heart of modern civilization lies cultural diversity, which exists in constant interconnection. Each culture has its own linguistic system through which its members communicate with one another. The significance of language in the culture of any nation cannot be overstated. Language is a cultural tool that shapes an individual's identity. It is through language that one perceives the mentality, traditions, customs of their people, and the specific cultural worldview.
Ensuring social stability in the current circumstances places special importance on the need for a tolerant attitude towards foreign languages and cultures, as well as the discomfort that inevitably arises during their interaction. This explains the special attention of today's global community to pressing issues of intercultural and international communication. The close connection and interdependence between teaching foreign languages and intercultural communication is evident today, as every foreign language lesson represents a crossroads of cultures realized through the practice of intercultural communication, as each foreign word reflects a part of a foreign world, a different culture.
The study of foreign languages profoundly influences the perception of other cultures. Language serves not only as a means of communication but also as a window that opens up the wide world of cultural specifics and peculiarities. Immersing ourselves in the learning and understanding of foreign languages allows us to explore the following key aspects:
1) Cultural contexts in which the study of foreign languages leads to a closer acquaintance with the cultural contexts in which these languages are used. Language reflects not only the means of communication but also the values, traditions, history, and mentality of each culture [1].
2) Learning foreign languages helps us understand the differences and similarities between our own culture and the cultures of other nations. This contributes to enhancing our ability to embrace the diversity of the world.
3) Breaking down stereotypes helps avoid common stereotypes and prejudices about other cultures. When we have a deeper understanding of language and cultural context, we can more objectively assess representatives of other cultures.
4) Proficiency in foreign languages promotes better intercultural dialogue. This is crucial not only in interpersonal relationships but also in business, politics, and international relations.
5) Language learning requires empathy and the ability to consider different perspectives. It helps develop our capacity to perceive and understand other people, even when their beliefs and views differ from ours.
To sum it up, the study of foreign languages opens new horizons for us and contributes to improving our perception and communication with other cultures. It enriches our experience and makes our world more diverse and interesting.
Differences in mentalities and cultural characteristics can significantly impact intercultural communication through language, such as:
Linguistic etiquette: Different cultures may have distinct linguistic etiquettes that dictate how to communicate correctly with others. For example, some cultures may be more formal, requiring the use of specific ceremonial expressions or defined forms of greeting.
Use of speech forms: Different linguistic cultures may employ various speech forms to express respect or social hierarchy. For instance, some languages have a wide range of address terms for others, depending on age, social status, and so forth.
Concept of time: In some cultures, emphasis may be placed on precise and timely communication, while others may have a more flexible view of time. This can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts in planning and meetings.
Expression of emotions: Different cultures may have different ways of expressing emotions through language. Some may be more expressive, emphasizing their feelings, while others may be more cautious and reserved in expressing emotions.
Sequential Communication: Some cultures may involve more step-by-step communication, where general topics are discussed before transitioning to the main idea, while others may prefer direct and straightforward communication.
Understanding these differences in mentalities and cultural characteristics is crucial for successful intercultural communication. When learning foreign languages, it is also essential to study the cultural context in which these languages are used to avoid misunderstandings and improve communication with representatives of different cultures [2].
The relationship between language and national culture reveals and characterizes the following statements:
• Language is a mirror of culture, as it reflects the surrounding world, the national character, mentality, traditions, and the value system.
• Language is a treasury of culture because it preserves cultural heritage in its vocabulary, grammar, phraseology, and immortalizes them in folklore, artistic, and scientific literature.
• Language is a carrier of culture; it acts as a relay, passing on the cultural heritage of a nation from generation to generation, as the youth, together with the language, assimilates the accumulated experience of their ancestors.
• Language is an instrument of culture. It shapes the national character of individuals, who are language speakers because the process of using it is inseparable from instilling in the consciousness of the younger generation the worldview, mentality, and a complex of moral and ethical values of the nation.
Transitioning into a new cultural and linguistic context requires individuals who possess another language to alter their perception of the world by combining their original understanding of reality with the new one acquired through the mastery of another language, thereby expanding their consciousness [3]. Therefore, the theory of intercultural communication remains an abstraction until research focused on analyzing interactions among representatives of specific linguistic cultures is conducted. Consequently, a new concept must be grounded in the study of intercultural interactions within the context of cultural globalization, addressing issues related to internet usage, ideological and epistemological consequences arising in the cultural environment due to these processes. Equally important is the quest for an optimal balance between preserving linguistic diversity and integration, as well as the creation of a global linguistic ecosystem that takes into account the diversity and uniqueness of individual linguistic cultures. Various perspectives on the nature and role of intercultural communication in new conditions, as discussed in the article, can contribute to a deeper understanding of this process. Notably, questions related to determining what holds paramount importance in intercultural communication - similarity or difference between cultures, languages, and the mentality of their speakers - remain relevant.
Studying languages in the context of intercultural communication is not only an academic task but also a key to broadening one's perspective, improving communication, and enriching one's personality. This process helps overcome language barriers and opens the doors to various cultural worlds. Learning a language is associated with numerous advantages, including a deep understanding of other cultures, increased tolerance, fostering intercultural dialogue, expanding opportunities for education and employment, developing cognitive skills, and enriching one's experience. However, it's important to remember that language learning is more than just communication skills; it's a process that opens new horizons for understanding and mutual comprehension of different cultures, and it depends on how we make use of these opportunities in our personal and professional lives. Knowledge and proficiency in multiple languages become invaluable resources in the modern world, where international cooperation and understanding of different cultures are becoming increasingly important for the development of global society.
