Re-evaluation of legal translation strategies

Legal translation is an extremely important component in the field of law. It requires not only a high level of language skills from the translator, but also a deep understanding of the legal system of both languages used in the translation process. In this text, we will look at key aspects of legal translation and pay attention to the problems that translators may face.
One of the most important problems in legal translation is accuracy and ambiguity. In the legal text, even the slightest inaccuracy can lead to serious legal consequences. Therefore, the translator must make every possible effort to preserve the accuracy of the original and reproduce it in translation.
Also an important component of legal translation is the use of specialized terminology dictionary and reference materials. The translator must be known with the terms and concepts used in the legal text and use them in relevant contexts. [2, p.59]. translation strategie language
Defining the translation strategy is, first of all, determining which priority aspects of the original text should be reproduced in translation. It is not always possible to comprehensively and accurately convey these aspects in the language of translation, but the definition of the leading features will help the translator. It is believed that we can talk about the general principles of the translation strategy. Translation strategy is understood as a set of stages of translation and translation actions aimed at solving global and local translation problems in order to achieve formal similarity of translation of the original [3, p. 64].
The translator must have a deep understanding of the legal systems of both languages between which the translation takes place. This includes knowledge of legislation, spelling and procedures, as well as legal terminology.
Neutral translation strategy is most often implemented by searching for direct dictionary matches. Many legal documents have a standard structure and format. The translator must adhere to these structural rules in order to maintain the consistency and consistency of the text. Due to the dissimilarity of the grammatical structure of the Ukrainian and English languages, the neutral translation strategy also involves the use of grammatical transformations. At the same time, the cognitive model of comparison in the text of the original and the translation remains unchanged. In some cases, a neutral translation strategy, in addition to grammatical transformations, also involves the use of techniques for adding or removing lexical units (usually adjectives that denote certain characteristics of the standard of comparison). In this case, the cognitive model of comparison is stored in the text of the translation.
The tactics of stylistic adaptation are found in the decisions of the translator related to the change of the stylistic register of speech in the direction of idiomatization. At the same time, the cognitive model of comparison in the text of the original and the translation remains unchanged.
The tactics of formal adaptation are embodied by the use of structural and functional elements of the Ukrainian language, which have no analogs in the English language [ 2, p. 94-97].
The reception of the movement of lexical units in the utterance allows the use of the nearest equivalents of the word of the original elsewhere in the statement, for certain reasons (mainly due to the lexical consonance of words in the language of translation) it can not be used where it is in the original.
The use of lexical addition is widely used in the translation process. Many elements of the content remain in the original unexpressed, so it is believed that it must be expressed in translation by means of grammatical means. Acceptance of omission is the opposite of addition and aims to refuse transmission in the translation of semantically common words, the meanings of which are not relevant or can be easily restored in context. The semantic saturation can be used in English so-called paired synonyms -parallel to the words used with similar meanings. Acceptance of omission may not be associated with the desire to prevent unwanted elements of the original. One of the reasons for its use may be excessive concreteness of the English text, expressed in the use of numerals, names of weight and values, that is, where the meaning is sufficiently motivated [1, p. 114].
Summing up, it can be noted that legal translation requires responsibility, deep knowledge and attention to detail, so the choice of translation strategy involves pre-translation analysis of the original text, the choice of translation methods, taking into account all the difficulties and relevant presentation of information. Many elements of translation strategies are variable and must be taken into account by translators depending on different conditions. It is important to remember that accuracy and clarity in legal translation are extremely important, since even minor mistakes can have serious legal consequences.
