Everything on the cutting edge in the creative industries comes out in English, including mainstream festivals and cases. You need to be able to read quickly and understand what they say in the video, sometimes commenting. Sometimes it will be just research and selection of references, and on some projects, you will have to write directly in English. Two resources are suitable for working in English: the Context Reverso website, which shows the translation of words in context, and the Grammarly extension - an assistant in writing and editing texts based on artificial intelligence [1, 2].
The language had better be maintained naturally - when most of the content you consume is Englishspeaking. These are books, professional materials, and videos on YouTube. As soon as you work on the Internet or launch professional software, you can fully immerse yourself in the language environment. Almost all scientific articles, studies and other educational materials are in English. Not knowing the language, you tie your hands and deprive yourself of many growth opportunities. And not even talking about a career - a vast amount of entertainment content and infotainment will pass by.
The Advanced level can disappear if you do not polish your foreign language skills. It is enough to read and watch more in English to support it. Subscribe to TikTok, Instagram and Telegram various accounts to enrich your vocabulary and conversational level of the language. Working with international clients in English, you will need a proficiency level to grasp all the nuances. More and more creative industry specialists feel that their profession is part of the general cultural topics rather than a separate factory. Designers need English to get first-hand information, understand terms, receive orders from companies from all over the world and learn from the experience of foreign colleagues.
Without knowledge of English, you can learn to be a designer, but it is unlikely to achieve great success. It is not just about working with foreign customers. Knowledge of the language speeds up the process of work and solving complex tasks and allows you to be aware of all innovations in your own and related fields. On the one hand, you can design something without English. It is enough to remember the position of the necessary buttons learned from the IT lessons or use the Ukrainian version of the program. But it will make it difficult to work. And the Figma graphic editor does not have a Ukrainian-language interface [5].
Most reference materials, lessons and discussions are available in English only. The online translator will not help here - there are too many specialized terms. Finding information for a designer is further complicated by a high level of abstraction. It is difficult to formulate and find the desired effect of beautiful highlights on a gradient background in your native language too.
In addition to functional skills, knowledge of English opens up opportunities for remote work with foreign clients or in a foreign company. Therefore, a second language is a serious competitive advantage. It is not comfortable to be part of the design community and keep up with the market without English. All the abbreviations we come across are in English: UX - user experience, UI - user interface, AI - artificial intelligence. Most of the current documentation and information resources published in English worth getting first-hand, that is, studying data directly from the Apple developers. In any case, there is a place for artistic interpretation of theses in translation.
Business work differently on various metrics, which, by the way, are also in English. We live in a world where you can work remotely anywhere, with any customers. When you do not know English, then, firstly, you limit yourself only to the Ukrainian market. Secondly, only by the Ukrainian user. Thirdly, companies that produce something only for the Ukrainian market can specialize only in Ukrainian users. It is a very narrow audience. Large business ecosystems have been entering the European market for a long time.
Designers from different countries know English and are ready to answer questions if you have any. Knowledge of a foreign language allows you to communicate with designers from other countries, where there may be their approach and native audience.
Design is a global system because we use the same tools, evaluate cases in the same way, and use the same methodologies. Design cases for free global viewing are at sites where they communicate only in English. For example, on Behance, Dribbble, and Awwwards. Local communities in all countries are small [6, 7, 8].
Without English, you will miss a lot of UX design cases. Not just with the visual side of the design, when you can look at the picture, but with the part that concerns the design principles, when you need to understand what kind of business cases it is, what exactly the designer changed in the concept, what he improved in user experience. There are many more such cases in English than in Ukrainian. It is most interesting to read and comment on them, maybe even enter into correspondence with their creators. English increases the value of a designer as a professional in the market. To be aware of what is happening worldwide, subscribe to newsletters such as AIGA Eye on Design. They review the latest trends an d young up-and-coming designers and discuss hot topics [9].
It is crucial to read books about design without waiting for their Ukrainian translation. For example, the book Debates is about a discussion by Wim Crouwel and Jan van Toorn. We still do not have an official translation, although there is an amateur version from 2020 on the web. Wim Crouwel and Jan van Toorn are two giants of the Dutch design world with opposite views. Wim Crouwel is a very famous minimalist, neutral and rational designer. Jan van Toorn is more of an artist, a postmodernist. The book arrived in 2015. It is challenging and relevant to transfer their thoughts nowadays: the confrontation between rationalism and creativity has always been and always will be [10].

Don't be afraid to be confused. You want to understand all foreign language intricacies and understand every word. But this desire only slows down the process. You will constantly encounter unfamiliar words and expressions. The biggest mistake you can make is to get angry at yourself for not understanding the text for the first time and constantly checking with the dictionary. Don't be afraid to get a little lost in the language wilds. When we are not scared that we will not understand something, we pay more attention to important things and do not lose the desire to learn new things.
Immerse yourself in the language. As soon as you have learned at least something, put it into action. Do not postpone practice until you have memorized the whole theory. Do not wait for the day when you will be one hundred per cent sure of your English. Try to talk a lot, read as many texts as possible, and listen to audio clips and songs. To create a language environment without going abroad, look for ways to introduce the language you are learning into your life. For example, start looking for information about what you are interested in, exclusively in a foreign language. Such an approach will help you stay engaged and interested. The main thing is to practice daily, do not forget to practice for 15 minutes at least. Regularity will help to succeed.
Move on to conversational practice as soon as possible. Olly Richards learned Italian in 90 days while he devoted the second and third months of training to intensive speaking practice. He advises: a month after the start of classes, start daily oral training. Talk a lot, loudly and about everything in the world. There are many opportunities to organize a conversational practice without leaving the country: lessons with a personal teacher, meetings of discussion clubs, and just conversations with yourself.
Start working on your pronunciation right away. It's never too late to learn 1,000 more new words or dig into grammar rules. But there is one thing that will be very difficult to fix later. And this is the pronunciation. Olly Richards firmly believes that one of the first steps in learning any language is working on correct pronunciation. It is much easier to immediately understand how all these unusual English sounds are pronounced than to relearn them in a couple of years.
Do not confuse pronunciation with an accent. Pronunciation is the basic rule of articulation. It is critical to pronounce all the sounds correctly to be understood. But the accent is the w ay to pronounce words. And there is nothing wrong with a Ukrainian accent: it is no worse than Yorkshire, Chinese or French.
Read thoughtfully. Reading is a skill, but not all books are suitable for pumping it. Olly Richards recommends starting with the texts you like them. Do you grow basil and petunias on the windowsill? Look for gardening books. Do you like stories about elves and dragons? Read English fantasy.
It matters how you do it. Here is a recipe from Olly Richards:
a) Read the chapter from beginning to end and try to understand as much as possible;
b) Go back and reread the text. Look up the meaning of unknown words in the dictionary. Pay attention to often repeated words;
c) Move on to the next chapter.
Learn one language at a time. Olly Richards often hears: "How to learn several languages simultaneously?" The correct answer is no way. You had better learn one language. There is a direct correlation between how focusing on a subject and how long you need to study to master it. And if you add a second language, you will start to disperse your attention and spend more time studying. But if you want to learn two languages in parallel, choose very different ones - for example, Italian and Japanese [12].
