Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes
Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 May 1859 - 7 July 1930) was a British writer and physician, most noted for his fictional stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction.
He is also known for writing the fictional adventures of a second character he invented, Professor Challenger, and for popularising the mystery of the Mary Celeste. He was a prolific writer whose other works include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.
He got his middle name in honor of his father's uncle, who was a writer and painter. His mother, Mary Foley, was passionate about literature and books. She had a great talent of a narrator that Arthur inherited. The future writer had to grow in a strange family, as his father suffered from alcoholism and had psychological problems. They often experienced financial difficulties. When the boy was 9, some rich relatives offered to pay his education at a noble Jesuit college.
Under the influence of Dr. Waller, who rented a room in their house, Arthur decided to pursue medical career and entered the University of Edinburgh. There, he met future writers R. L. Stevenson and J. Barrie. As a student, he tried his talent in literary field.
In 1885 Doyle married Mary Louise (sometimes called "Louisa") Hawkins, the youngest daughter of J. Hawkins, and sister of one of Doyle's patients. She suffered from tuberculosis and died on 4 July 1906. The following year he married Jean Elizabeth Leckie, whom he had first met and fallen in love with in 1897. He had maintained a platonic relationship with Jean while his first wife was still alive, out of loyalty to her. Jean died in London on 27 June 1940.
Doyle was found clutching his chest in the hall of Windlesham Manor, his house in Crowborough, East Sussex, on 7 July 1930. He died of a heart attack at the age of 71. His last words were directed toward his wife: "You are wonderful.“ The epitaph on his gravestone in the churchyard reads, in part: "Steel true, Blade straight, Arthur Conan Doyle, Knight, Patriot, Physician, and man of letters".
Sherlock Holmes
The character first appeared in print in 1887, and was featured in four novels and 56 short stories by Conan Doyle. The first novel, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character's popularity grew with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia"
Doyle said that Holmes was inspired by Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for whom he had worked as a clerk. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing broad conclusions from minute observations.
Within two years, Doyle created the story behind the story, and eventually began to tire of his own character. His attempt to "do away" with Holmes in the battle with Professor Moriarty ("The Final Problem", 1893) was a failure: The flow of letters of perturbed readers, among whom were members of the royal family (according to legend, Queen Victoria herself), forced the writer to "revive" the famous detective and continue describing his adventures.
The extraordinary popularity of Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion and biographer Dr. Watson (Watson) is gradually developed into a new branch of mythology, whose center is steel a London apartment on Baker Street, 221B.
Adaptation
The story of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson got into the Guinness Book of Records by the number of adaptations. Currently there are about 210 films with the participation of the detective.
Soviet five films about Sherlock Holmes, wherein starring roles played Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomin, recognized one of the best performances in the movie, even the British, and an acting couple "Livanov-Solomin" British critics called "the best continental pair of actors ever played Holmes and Watson "
"Elementary, my dear Watson"
The phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" is never uttered by Holmes in the sixty stories written by Conan Doyle. He often observes that his conclusions are "elementary", however, and occasionally calls Watson "my dear Watson". One of the nearest approximations of the phrase appears in "The Adventure of the Crooked Man", when Holmes explains a deduction: "'Excellent!' I cried. 'Elementary,' said he." sherlock holmes detective watson
The phrase "Elementary, my dear fellow, quite elementary" (not spoken by Holmes) appears in novel, Psmith in the City, and novel Psmith, Journalist. The exact phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" is used by protagonist Tom Beresford in Agatha Christie's novel The Secret Adversary. It also appears at the end of the film The Return of Sherlock Holmes, the first Holmes sound film. William Gillette (who played Holmes on the stage and on radio) had previously said, "Oh, this is elementary, my dear fellow". These phrases may have become familiar. Holmes utters the exact phrase in the 1953 short story "The Adventure of the Red Widow" by Conan Doyle's son, Adrian.
