(Sonnet 137).
The poet's feeling becomes extremely complicated. Even after being convinced of infidelity, he retains the Lady's affection. A lie reigns in their relationship:
"I lie to you, you lie involuntarily to me,
And it seems that we are quite satisfied!" (138).
The contrast between feelings for a friend and for a lover is obvious. In feelings for a friend, even pain and bitterness are light, feelings for the beloved become unbearable and love turns into a continuous torment:
My love is as a fever, longing still
For that which longer nurseth the disease,
Feeding on that which doth preserve the ill,
Th' uncertain sickly appetite to please.
My reason, the physician to my love,
Angry that his prescriptions are not kept,
Hath left me, and I desperate now approve
Desire is death, which physic did except.
Past cure I am, now reason is past care,
And frantic-mad with evermore unrest;
My thoughts and my discourse as madmen's are,
At random from the truth vainly expressed:
For I have sworn thee fair, and thought thee bright,
Who art as black as hell, as dark as night.
"Love is a disease. My soul is sick with a longing, unquenchable thirst. She demands the same poison that poisoned her once"
William Shakespeare
(Sonnet 147).
Love clouds the mind and deprives the ability to see people and the world in their true light:
"Love is blind and deprives us of eyes.
I don't see what I see clearly.
I saw beauty, but every time I could not understand
What was wrong, what was beautiful"
(Sonnet 137).
Note that, unlike other works in Sonnets, the lyrical hero does not seek a way out for himself in death. The lyrical hero of the Sonnets, although he calls death, still finds something that reconciles him with life: this is his friend and the joy that love for him gives. He doesn't want to leave his friend in a harsh world:
"I call death.
I can't stand the dignity that begs for alms,
The lies that mock at simplicity,
Insignificance in luxurious attire,
And a false sentence to perfection,
And virginity, rudely abused,
And disgrace for inappropriate honor,
And power in captivity with toothless weakness,
And directness that is reputed to be stupidity,
And stupidity in the mask of a sage, a prophet,
And inspiration shut mouth,
And righteousness at the service of vice.
Everything I see around me is disgusting.
But how can I leave you, dear friend!"
If one could be sure that the arrangement of the sonnets corresponds to the chronology of events, then the outcome of this whole lyrical story would be tragic, because the whole cycle ends with the curses of that love that belittles a person, forces him to put up with lies and be deceitful himself. The refuge from suffering is the renewal of friendship, which trials have made even stronger. The platonic idea of love as a spiritual feeling wins a complete victory in Shakespeare's "Councils".
Conclusion
Shakespeare's Sonnets are a true masterpiece of English Renaissance lyrics. Genuine human feelings, great passions and humane thoughts broke through the conventionality and artificial framework of form in them. In his mastery of language, he is one of the greatest poets of all time. He is equally able to express energetic, sublime, graceful and tender feelings, social status, degree of education. The peculiarities of the character of each actor are expressed in Shakespeare, by the nature of his speech. sonnets shakespeare english renaissance
The usual size in his dramas is iambic pentameter without rhymes; but in lyrical places he often uses other sizes, and when necessary by the nature of the content, replaces poems with prose.
The brilliance of Shakespeare's language gives a wonderful richness to his imagination. Thoughts and images appear to his imagination in such abundance that he barely has time to express them, and due to the conciseness of the language caused by this, he is dark in some places, often hyperbolic. But where he has no exaggerations, he is, by the charm and power of language, a poet who hardly has an equal in world literature. Shakespeare immerses the reader in the atmosphere of withering life, using such artistic and expressive means as epithet, metaphor, comparisons, personifications, anaphora, inversion, alliteration.
And having studied the scientific literature devoted to the peculiarities of such a peculiar genre as the sonnet, we examined its typological features and development in European literature. This allowed us to perform an independent analysis of "Sonnet No. 73" by W. Shakespeare and prove that the theme of Time is embodied in the sonnets of the English poet not only at the level of their content, but also form.
Shakespeare's Sonnets are a true masterpiece of English Renaissance lyrics. Genuine human feelings, great passions and humane thoughts broke through the conventionality and artificial framework of form in them.
