Zdzislaw Beksinski’s paintings in early-school education

The great potential in terms of communication and meaning of the modern art. For communication via image is an original stratum of dialogue between a child and an adult. The use of Zdzislaw Beksinski’s paintings to develop imagination of the pupils.

Other child meanings are, for instance, references to the religious rite in the form of a funeral. Children hold knowledge about it as they know that in the case of a man's death his burial takes place. They colloquially say that a man who dies «goes to heaven». This is grounded in the Christian religion. It assumes existence of heaven and hell.

As can thus be seen, issues related to the Christian religion are not unfamiliar to early education children. They already hold some knowledge about this matter. Interestingly enough, death does not generate children's negative emotions. It seems something natural. Children realise that people pass away and get to heaven, which appears obvious to them.

As can be seen from the analysis of interviews carried out, children are aware of religious rites, and these are mainly activities cultivated in homes. Practising certain rituals and traditions becomes anchored in the child's memory from the youngest age and it has influence on its meaningfulness, on the basis of which a child's colloquial knwoledge about the world can be examined.

Reflection round-up. Children speak about paintings with images. They speak about the social reality through meanings derived from such messages as for example: animated films, literature for children, external surroundings. They have their own convictions about the world surrounding them. As this research shows, they can marvel at art and do not confine themselves to expressing only what they simply like or not. They are capable of expressing their emotions and describing in detail what they see. Thanks to art they develop in themselves the competence of proper reception of visual messages. For paintings convey to them certain content which little recipients construe in different ways. They assign to them distinct senses and different meanings.

Thanks to it, they arrive at deeper recognition of themselves, cultivation of the inside of themselves, and, what follows, better familiarity with the world.

This type of «speaking» with a picture can also relate to features of the young generation, frequently called the generation of Internet or the «Network Generation» [2, p. 42]. Networkers understand the new reality better than the generation of adults [2, p. 96]. They surprise us with greater smartness, quickness, flexibility of thought, the ability to do a few things at a time and higher tolerance for any technological novelties [3]. The world of media constitutes the everyday surroundings to them, from which they derive their comprehensive knowledge.

The studies conducted also show children's cause-and-effect reasoning. Interpreting the paintings presented, children reach for the knowledge they hold and life experience and use them to create their own narrations. What may astonishing is that they can without any difficulty refer to a hard topic, such as for example death, fear, sickness, magic, power, poverty etc. Children transform given objects, they change figures or articles into something different. They are only learning meanings which have been imposed in the world by adult recipients. Their reasoning is only being shaped, and the emotional sphere developed in an individual manner. Early education age is a time of intensive development, and also a moment of a child opening to the surrounding reality, and this is why it should be filled with diverse experience when discovering the world. The experience that children undergo in this period of life constitute foundations on which their personality is shaped and also their position and attitude to other people in society. It is important to let children take an active part in discovering reality, to provide assistance to them and to ensure their development through art for example. For assigning meanings to Zdzislaw Beksinski's paintings was an attractive adventure to children. Bringing them to a message difficult to them is also a certain type of «taming» art. Little explorers need guidelines of more experienced people as to how to interpret a painting, but they also need to have liberty in «reading» such visual messages, as it is what the reception of a painting consists in, as per U. Eco's The Open Work [1]. It is thus worth letting the child get to know the world fully and discover new structures of reality by independent observation of selected messages from the whole range of cultural heritage available.
