Данная статья посвящена теме обогащения словарного запаса на занятиях английского языка. Рассматривает вопросы - как правильно прочитать, произнести, как запомнить новые слова на примере темы: “My appearance, character and clothes”. Предлагает методы и приемы изучения, запоминания новых слов.

Abstract
This article reveals the theme of enrichment of vocabulary in English. It examines such issues as how to read, speak, how to memorize new words on the topic: "My appearance, character and clothes". It provides methods and techniques of learning and memorizing new words.

Nowadays we talk about innovative teaching methods a lot. We have to use non-traditional lessons: presentations, brainstorming and role plays and etc.
Usually most lessons are started with new vocabulary. It is very important to know English words for having conversation.
In my article I consider the topic “My appearance, character and clothes”. Basically people judge by appearance and first impression. Whether we are right or not is another question. The first impression is the brightest. There are some proverbs about appearance, character and clothes. For example, appearances can be deceiving; like a fence, character cannot be strengthened by whitewash; clothes make the man; good clothes open all doors. When we meet new people we should know how to present ourselves. Therefore, this topic can help us to learn the vocabulary in English.
Unfortunately, or may be, fortunately, verbatim learning is not a productive method in the modern teaching process. It is rather boring for students to be required just to learn the new words by heart and take oral and written quizzes the next lesson. Even if students get excellent marks it does not mean they will remember the words for a long time. It often happens that later they cannot remember even half of them. If you meet the word in interesting situations or hear it from your group mates in private conversation or in any other way it is memorized much better and not forgotten for a long time because it was associated with the situation that is unique. vocabulary english word
How to make this process. First of all, to make up a list of words which are expected to be learnt by students. The glossary should consist of 3 parts: “Appearance”, “Character” and “Clothes”. It will be helpful to make it visual using a table with words in English and their translation in Russian. It is better to read the words aloud for forming right pronunciation.
At the beginning students are divided into two groups. They use cards with adjectives describing the character of the person are given to the first group of students. All students who have cards should come to the students who have no cards and ask such questions as “Are you hardworking”? After answers students who have cards describe themselves using new words, for example, “I am sociable, not boring”. The rest of the students listen to them and try to memorize the main information about characters. Then a teacher asks some students to retell heard information. This method helps students to memorize new words, to hear English speech, to repeat the Present Simple Tense and develop the skills of expressing emotions.
Other cards can be used for memorizing new words when students work in pairs. Two tables consist of 4 columns. They are: names of different people, their appearance, their character and clothes. The information is missed in staggered-order in the first table and is written in the second one. The cards are handed out to the students and they are not allowed to look at the cards of their partners. Their task is to complete the missed information asking questions in English. When the cards are filled the teacher selectively asks students to give the description of different people from the table. The given method helps students to consolidate received knowledge, to learn new words and develop oral and written skills.
Next type of activity is aimed at visual perception. A teacher prepares photos with people with different appearance and cards with descriptions of their appearance. The students have to match people with descriptions of appearance.
For improving speaking skills the following activity can be used. A teacher prepare photos of his friends or relatives (age and appearance should be different). Students' task is to guess age, character, members of family, interests and other personal qualities. After students' speech the teacher tells them the truthful information. The students compare the information and find some differences and similarities.
For consolidation of the new information the following activity can be done: each student is asked to give the detailed description of one group mate without using his or her name. The rest students should guess who is described. This activity requires knowledge of words and ability to express the thoughts in English.
When we take the topic “My appearance, character and clothes” it is important to be careful about dividing students into pairs. Friends should not work together because they know a lot about each other; therefore it can lower their interest in working together, using such kinds of cards. Students have to gather information about their partner's mother/father/best friend, etc. (name, age, appearance, character, profession, interests). Each card includes names of different people from who they should get the information. The cards have to be numbered, so each card will have a pair with the same number. Thereby, the students are told the task and also the partner who they will be working with. Certain amount of time is given to students to find the person who has the same number on the card and sit together to get the information they need speaking English. After working in pairs they should present the information they have learnt. The given activity helps not only to improve the vocabulary but also to develop speaking skills and to use right English grammar.
The following activity can be used for improving logical thinking: make up about 15 questions defining the character of person without using adjectives. For example, use such questions as “Do you like to talk a lot? Do you usually work hard?” and so on. Then prepare some adjectives (hardworking, talkative, etc.) Students work in pairs, ask questions to each other and answer them. After their dialogues students have to find suitable adjectives for describing the partner's. For example: “I think Alina is hardworking because she studies very well. Also she is secretive because she does not like to share her life with other people” and etc. This kind of activity improves speaking skills and work logically when they describe the partner.
There are some exercises for listening on the pages 41, 43 (New English File Intermediate, Student's book, 2006). CD 3.5. - Look at the four men and listen. Which one is a bank robber? The conversation between a policeman and old ladies, where they have to describe a man they saw in the bank. [1, 41]
Next exercise is 5, CD 3.8, 3.9. - Listen to the 2 parts of the radio interview about Rafael Lloyd - flamenco guitarist. Describe his appearance, character, interests and etc, looking at photo, then after listening to the 1st part of radio interview students have to check their answers. C.D. 3.9 - Listen to the 2nd part of radio interview and answer the questions. [1, 43]
There is also 1 interesting exercise at page 42. Task is look at the photo of the three women. Who do you think is who? (millionaire's daughter, managing director, policewoman). Match them with the photos. Then students read the texts where women describe themselves. Check the answers. Another one task is to answer the questions. [1, 42]
The given complex of exercises on the topic “My appearance, character and clothes” helps to memorize new words, to develop skills of oral and written speech, to use English Grammar properly, to develop critical and logical thinking, to remove barriers and fear of speaking in English.
