An extended abstract of the paper on the subject of:
“The role of narrative competence in the development of leadership qualities”
Problem setting
In the modern educational environment, the issue of the importance of narrative competence in the formation of leadership qualities is covered only in narrow scientific environments. The underestimation of this component leads to the loss of a fairly powerful and simple tool for creating meanings and goals that affect both personal and overall development in general. In turn, this can affect the effectiveness of the link between higher education, science and business, as well as the lack of digital transformation in education, which complicates the possibility of introducing new methods and tools, such as narrative competence, into leadership practice.
Thus, today's problem is a certain need for an open and deep understanding of the role of narrative in the process of leadership development, as well as the need to strengthen the link between education, science and practice for the effective implementation of innovative approaches to leadership training and development.
Recent research and publication analysis
Ukraine has accumulated some experience in researching the problem of forming the leadership competence of future professionals, in particular in management and educational management. For example, in the process of training a future psychologist at the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute ”, due attention is paid to the publications and educational process of the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology of Social Systems Management named after Academician I. Zyazyun - O. Romanovskyi (development of an innovative concept of formation of the humanitarian and technical elite, creation and successful functioning of a well-known scientific school on the problems of elite and leadership), N. Pidbutska (development of a methodology for the formation of national leadership). T. Hura (pedagogical aspects of personality formation and education at a technical university, psychology of leadership formation and development), M. Chebotarev (formation of readiness for adaptive management in the independent practical activity of university graduates, activities of managers-leaders in modern market conditions), A. Knysh (emotional intelligence of a leader in business, theory and practice of leader formation, and information and communication technologies in psychology), S. Reznik (mechanisms of education management in Ukraine; management of educational innovations; management psychology; leadership; pedagogy of facilitation) and others. A leadership center has also been created where future psychologists take an active part in conferences and the practice of forming a leader, which forms the communication competence of future psychologists. The training of psychologists-leaders in higher education institutions is aimed at improving not only their professional but also social competence, and developing the leadership competencies of a specialist.
The issue of narrative continues to be popular in study and research, so today it is a field that is constantly changing and developing. This phenomenon has been studied by such scholars as J. Bruner, K. Gergen, A. Kerby, G. Allport, T. Sarbin, C. Taylor, G. Abanina, K. Hutsul, N. Chepeleva. Scientists identify narrative as a means of forming the identity and uniqueness of a person. Through narratives, important events for a person can be traced, which go through stages of internal processes of evaluation and comprehension, making certain events significant for the perception and awareness of the individual.
Highlighting previously unsolved parts of the general problem, to which this article is devoted. The analysis of scientific sources and research shows that the study of the phenomenon of leadership is still relevant. Hence, we can conclude that the creation of new methodologies and concepts makes it possible to study this topic from a new perspective, which in turn contributes to a deeper understanding of the processes of formation and development of leaders, so the topic of narrative competence in the context of the development of potential leaders is promising for further scientific research.

Paper main body
Modern research on public administration continues to define public administration, leadership and power as multifaceted, multivalent phenomena with a complex and ambiguous interpretation [3]. In most cases, these aspects relate to the political system, although, as we know today, one can be a leader not only in politics. Although today, more and more researchers agree that the concept of a leader, not only in the political sphere, but in general, has a high emotional intensity. A leader has the ability to influence people, which allows him or her to use the power and authority of his or her followers [4]. Modern realities require leaders to have specific tools that will help them create and implement new opportunities. For example, in developing meanings and goals, leaders often overlook such a powerful tool as narrative, which is actually quite accessible in the form of storytelling. Few tools are as powerful and easily accessible to a leader as the use of personal and organizational narrative.
The concept of narrative competence is usually understood as the ability and skill of a person to consistently present a certain story about an event, outline the stages, describe the participants, place and personal attitude to the topic and subject of the story in accordance with the norms of social interaction accepted in a particular area, or, according to the psychological and hermeneutical approach, it is the process of transforming external events into the inner experience of a person through their ordering according to the features of a narrative text [8]. Narratives can be seen as a certain form of storytelling or constructs that individuals create in order to explain events, express their ideas, and reproduce their personal experience and perception of the world [5,7]. Through narratives, leaders are able to use stories more strategically and effectively to achieve important goals, such as motivating a team, building rapport, and influencing others. In particular, narratives help leaders create articulate and meaningful stories that influence the cognitive and emotional aspects of individuals' perceptions and behaviors, contributing to the formation of meanings and goals in the team and organization. For the effective development of leadership skills, a sufficient level of narrative competence can be determined by such aspects as, first of all, improving the effectiveness of communication itself. That is, narrative competence generally helps leaders understand how to communicate effectively with their team and audience. Thanks to this skill, a potential leader has the opportunity to create narratives that captivate and persuade, making ideas more understandable and more often reproduced [5].
The moment of motivation of a team, collective or group is a very important aspect of a leader's activity. In this case, developed narrative competence helps leaders to tell stories that can inspire and motivate others, and thus convey their values and views through narratives, which contributes to the achievement of a common goal and overall team support. In addition, narratives help team members to identify more easily with the leader and the common goal, as this in turn gives the team itself a sense of “team unity ”, a feeling that they are part of the whole story. It should also be noted that leaders who are able to tell narratives effectively usually have more authority and inspire more trust in the team and among stakeholders.
Improving a leader's narrative competence is a process that may take time and require some effort, but will result in significant improvements in communication, management, and team performance.
Based on the above information, we have developed recommendations for implementing narrative approaches in leadership practice to achieve greater efficiency:
Read and listen to narratives. Reading and listening to stories and narratives can help develop a so-called intuitive understanding of how they are constructed and function.
Support employees who tell stories. Acknowledging and listening to other people's stories and narratives enriches understanding employees. This can include business stories, anecdotes, or personal experiences that help explain your ideas and goals.
Use narratives for motivation, as it can help motivate the team to achieve high results.
Diversify your own narratives to broaden the horizons of understanding, as different cultures have their own communication patterns.
Develop your empathy. A leader with developed empathy has a greater ability to understand and empathize with other people. This helps to better understand different narratives and communicate effectively with the team.
Practice active listening. Listening carefully to others allows you to better understand their stories and narratives. Active listening can also help you see and understand the subtexts in other stories.
Be open to change. Being open to new ideas and perspectives can help broaden your understanding of narratives and help you communicate more effectively with different people.
Conclusions of the research. Today, both in Ukraine and around the world, there is still a need for effective managers-leaders, as leadership remains a certain strategic resource and, as practice shows, to some extent scarce. The modern view of a leader, first of all, emphasizes that a leader is a carrier of innovative culture. Modern development seeks to integrate into the global system, which is why there is a need for effective, qualified leaders. In today's environment, we observe that in the process of higher education development, we face challenges such as insufficient connection with science and business, the needfor digital transformation, and the need to develop universal competencies of future professionals. Narrative competence can be considered one of the important components of leadership development. Further research in this area will help to uncover new aspects that affect the development and effectiveness of leadership. And also to explore new opportunities to use innovative methods and technologies, such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence, to improve the level of narrative competence in leaders.
