Furthermore, international mediation efforts should be intensified, involving key stakeholders such as the United Nations, the European Union, and regional powers. These entities can play a crucial role in facilitating dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, working towards a diplomatic solution that addresses the concerns of both parties. Economic sanctions can be employed strategically to exert pressure on Russia to comply with international norms and respect Ukraine's sovereignty. Diplomatic efforts hold a pivotal role in mitigating the ongoing crisis and fostering peace negotiations. Diplomacy is instrumental in establishing ceasefires, delineating territorial boundaries, and enabling dialogues between conflicting parties. “Russia's transgressions in Ukraine are too serious for Europe to ignore or accept, even tacitly. It is therefore essential to stick to conditions for Russia's re-entry into key formats, such as the G7, on the steps it has to take in Ukraine. Dropping this conditionality would be rewarding Russia for misbehaviour” (Wesslau & Wilson; 2016).

An aggressor's inclusion as a member of the UN Security Council contradicts the fundamental objective of this global institution--to ensure and uphold peace. In order to fortify the Council's commitment to this mission, it is imperative that those engaged in acts of aggression are precluded from its membership. The principles of justice dictate that individuals responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and the incitement of hatred leading to unprecedented conflicts in the 21st century must face accountability for their actions. With this regard, the official position of Ukraine is quite clear: the main reason for the creation of the UN was rooted in the post-war world, which wanted guarantees of peace and security, and that has become one of the most essential principles of the organization. However, it has been despised for years by Russia. A seat among the permanent representatives of the UN Security Council was taken by a country that has unleashed numerous wars and armed conflicts in the last 30 years alone, the bloodiest of which is currently unfolding against Ukraine. Russia rejects important UN resolutions with its veto, uses the organization as a platform for spreading propaganda, and illegally takes its place among peace-loving member states, violating the UN Charter and undermining global security. https://war.ukraine.ua/articles/russian-vetoundermines-the-un-and-that-has-to-change/

The call for accountability extends beyond mere condemnation; it necessitates concrete measures to address the root causes of aggression and prevent its recurrence. A crucial step towards this goal involves holding war criminals accountable through robust legal mechanisms. The international community, as the custodian of justice and peace, has a responsibility to demand the demilitarization and denuclearization of entities involved in aggressive actions. In this context, a focused effort should be directed towards the Russian Federation, emphasizing the urgency of reducing the risks associated with future acts of aggression. Ukraine urges that international organizations must take decisive action by adopting resolutions aimed at addressing the expulsions, suspensions, or limitations of membership rights concerning the invader Russiaa. This call for action stems from Ukraine's commitment to upholding the principles of international law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, which have been repeatedly violated by Russia's aggressive actions.

Still, the demilitarization and denuclearization of the Russian Federation should not be viewed as punitive measures but rather as essential steps towards fostering global security and stability. By dismantling the machinery of aggression, the international community can pave the way for diplomatic dialogue, conflict resolution, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence. Collaborative efforts must be undertaken to establish a framework that not only addresses the immediate aftermath of aggression but also works towards preventing its reemergence in the future. Track II diplomacy, involving non-governmental organizations and citizen groups, can complement official negotiations and contribute to the development of mutual trust. Thus, a multi-faceted approach that combines diplomatic negotiations, international mediation, economic pressure, and grassroots engagement is essential in addressing the complex challenges posed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, Russia maintains its maximalist objectives in Ukraine and is uninterested in good faith negotiations despite reports that Western officials are becoming more amenable to eventual Ukrainian negotiations with Russia to end the war. An unspecified Biden administration official and a European diplomat told Politico in an article published on December 27 that the Biden administration and European officials are shifting their focus from supporting Ukraine's total victory over Russia to improving Ukraine's position in presumed eventual negotiations with Russia to end the war. Politico noted that such negotiations would likely force Ukraine to cede territory to Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed on December 27 that the West intends to freeze the war in Ukraine then frame it as a victory and rhetorically asked what victories the United States achieved in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq after having attempted the same thing. Lavrov's references to US involvement in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq suggest that Lavrov views the Western discussion about freezing the war and preparing for eventual Ukrainian negotiations with Russia as a Western willingness to accept Ukraine's defeat. Lavrov's statement is also consistent with recent Russian officials' statements that Russia is not interested in freezing the war or engaging in honest negotiations and will continue to pursue its expansionist territorial goals and efforts to “demilitarize” Ukraine. ISW previously assessed that a temporary ceasefire would likely provide the Russian military time to prepare for renewed aggression against Ukraine and that Russia would still ultimately maintain the same maximalist objectives for that renewed aggression. https://www.understandingwar.org/ backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-december-27-2023

Conclusion

Russia's invasion of Ukraine marks a turning point in contemporary international relations. The invasion challenges established norms and international order, emphasizing the evolving dynamics of global politics. Addressing the aftermath of this monumental event necessitates a concerted, united global effort that emphasizes the pivotal roles of diplomacy, economic cooperation, and strategic security measures. Russia's evident intent to dominate its immediate neighbors and maintain Ukraine's vulnerability underscores the critical need for a cohesive response from the international community. In the EU's “Eastern Partnership” initiative, Ukraine holds strategic significance, further emphasizing the urgency for collaborative action. What is more, after full-scale invasion of Russia, Ukraine gains a momentum for starting negotiations to join EU, in 14 December, at the EU summit in Brussels, the EU leaders decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine.

In this new geopolitical reality, the world grapples with a redefined landscape where power politics, geopolitics, and international security intersect. The principles of state sovereignty, the effectiveness of international institutions, and the efficacy of global governance face unprecedented challenges. That is why Ukrainian representatives stress all the time: if Ukraine wins, the international law will be restored as well. This invasion serves as a stark reminder that the pursuit of diplomacy and cooperation is a steadfast bulwark against the disarray of conflict. Simultaneously, effective economic strategies and coordinated security measures are essential for safeguarding the stability of nations and the international order. As nations and global institutions confront the implications of this transformative event, the imperative to adapt, innovate, and work in harmony becomes increasingly apparent. This moment serves as a collective call to action, challenging the international community to reassess its approach to peace and security on a global scale. It emphasizes the vital role of unity, collaboration, and a commitment to shared values in overcoming the challenges posed by evolving geopolitical landscapes and in building a resilient framework for a more secure and peaceful world. However, the fate of the Ukrainian regime is/can't be solely determined by military outcomes. Diplomatic efforts, international support, and the resilience of the Ukrainian people will also play a crucial role in shaping the future of the regime. The outcome of the war will be pivotal in shaping the trajectory of Ukraine's leadership and political landscape, with far-reaching implications for the country, international security and the region at large. But no doubt after this invasion Ukraine emerged as more stronger and united. Additionally, the invasion served as a wake-up call for Ukraine to address longstanding issues of corruption and inefficiency within its government and institutions.
