Smartphone

A smartphone or smart phone is a mobile phone with an advanced mobile operating system which combines features of a personal computeroperating system with other features useful for mobile or handheld use.

In addition to a Smartphone's communication functions, it can:

Send emails.

Use GPS to locate an address and keep you from getting lost.

Enable installation of other programs.

Allow any interface for data entry.

Manage digital agenda and contacts.

Display documents in various formats.

Allow Internet access.

Utilize an operating system.

Require permission to install third party programs.

Make, edit and store videos and photos.

Function as an mp3 player

To access these benefits, the devices must have an operating system such as Microsoft Mobile 6.0, BlackBerry RIM, Palm OS and OS X, to name a few. For example, you can watch a video while you answer a call. The Smartphone's main function is to perform more than one activity at a time.

Smartphone is a system which generally consists of hardware and software.

Hardware

Hardware is best described as any physical component of a computer system that contains a circuit board, ICs, or other electronics. Without any hardware, your computer/smartphone would not exist, and software could not be used.

Smartphones run on processors. Along with processors, smartphones also have computer chips that provide functionality. Phones with cameras have high-resolution image sensors, just like digital cameras. Other chips support complex functions such as browsing the Internet, sharing multimedia files or playing music without placing too great a demand on the phone's battery.

Smartphones have system-on-chip architecture with three primary components:

An application processor executing the end-user's application software with assistance from the middleware and operating system (OS),

A modem or baseband processor with its own operating system components responding to the baseband radio activities (transmission and reception of audio, video, and other data contents),

A number of peripheral devices for interacting with the end-user.

All this elements work with each other and are powered by battery.

Software

Software is a collection of instructions that enable the user to interact with a computer/smartphone, its hardware, or perform tasks. Without software, computers would be useless. Software is operation system and all programs in your smartphone.

You can visualize software for smartphones as a software stack. The stack consists of the following layers:

kernel - management systems for processes and drivers for hardware

middleware - software libraries that enable smartphone applications (such as security, Web browsing and messaging)

application execution environment (AEE) - application programming interfaces, which allow developers to create their own programs

user interface framework - the graphics and layouts seen on the screen

application suite - the basic applications users access regularly such as menu screens, calendars and message inboxes

Also there are different peripheral devices in smartphones. The OS needs to have the driver software installed for each such device.

Typical peripheral devices:

LCD and touchscreen

Keyboard

Camera

GPS

Speaker and audio output for headset/earphone

Microphone

Bluetooth and Wifi

HDTV

According to the classification of the systems smartphone is:

Concrete sys.

Artificial sys.

Machine sys.

Open sys.

Temporary sys.

Determined sys.

Conclusion

smartphone mobile operating

So smartphone is a rather difficult system of different elements. All components of smartphone interact with each other and have its own special purpose. When some of them are not very necessary (installed for more functions), other are the basis of the whole system (processor, operation system) and without them the system would not exist.
