Abstract

It proposes an architectural space that can relieve the psychological anxiety of modern people, and proposes a psychological healing space where you can feel psychological stability by blurring the boundary between non-material space and space as an architectural method.

Introduction

Recently, in Korea, social unrest is spreading due to the unexpected coronavirus pandemic and various other factors, resulting in low life satisfaction. Considering that the anxiety phenomenon has a negative ripple effect in various aspects of society, it should be the subject of important policy attention. However, the reality is that effective measures have not been devised so far due to the diversity of related variables in the policy field, the limits of policy intervention, and the uncertainty of policy effects. The purpose of this study is to understand the degree and cause of social and psychological anxiety in Korean society, and what health, social, economic, and psychological factors affect the degree of social and psychological anxiety, and to respond to stress caused by social and psychological anxiety and The goal is to find an architectural space that can help while providing psychological stability.

1. The status and problem of the Psychological Healing Facility and case studies

1.1 The status and problem of the Psychological Healing Facility

In Korea, the `mental health promotion center' is operated as an institution that plays a central role in managing psychological problems caused by the stress of social and psychological anxiety. However, according to the survey results, the reality is that there is a negative perception of the 'center' and the facilities are notably lacking, and the majority of people have doubts about whether it is a space they really want. In order to solve this problem, if a complex psychological healing space using a space that contains programs related to psychological healing exists, it is possible to naturally heal so that we can overcome anxiety together while recognizing that there is someone beside us, not alone. In addition, an environment will be prepared that can accommodate the present and future social phenomena.

1.2 Case studies

1) Windhover Contemplative Center.

The Windhover Contemplative Center was designed by architectural design studio Aidrin Darling Design as a space for Stanford University students to relieve the stress of academic and employment pressures and have a broader view of life and the world.

2) Museum SAN.

Museum San, located in Wonju-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea, is a building designed by Tadao Ando, who uses exposed concrete and natural elements organically. It starts with the impression of 'comfort surrounded by beautiful mountains and nature away from the hustle and bustle of the city' and shows the appearance of a country-type museum that is not a single building, but a square, triangular, circular main building and an outdoor garden.

1.3 Selection of Site

The design site is a religious recreation area for the Eighth US Army returned from USFK in December 2020 and is located on the east side of Namsan Mountain in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The surroundings of the site are quiet and the green space embraces the site, and Hangangjin Station on Line 6 and Beutigogae Station are located in a radius of about 600m from the site.

2. Design Process

2.1 Design Concept

There are various architectural elements that help psychological healing. If we combine the medium that naturally induces healing with architectural elements, we will be able to form a safe network that will help us overcome when we are sick or struggling. To show the form of immaterial space, ambiguous boundary areas such as corridors and large windows and doors, which are the form of transition space, were set. The facility shows the spatial composition in three forms: public, semi-public, and private. Each area does not exist separately, but is an architectural form that creates a healing environment by overlapping each other's sequences and showing them as one space.

The arrangement was divided into four areas: reception, culture, meditation, counseling and stay, and the mass was arranged. Through this, the information center, cafeteria, gallery, library, meditation room, counseling room, and stay room were selected as programs suitable for the area and arranged according to the area.

2.4 Integrated Design

1) Structural consultation.

This facility consists of a total of 8 buildings and is planned as a new construction. Rather than having a specific module shape, the modules were set up for each purpose, and a minimum column arrangement was made overall. Typically, in the case of a stay room, 4.0M x 7.0M was planned as the minimum space for a person to stay, and based on this, a module of 5.0M x 8.0M was set. In the case of the counseling room, 5.0M x 3.0M was planned for the space required for consultation as a whole, and 6.0M x 4.0M modules were set based on this. RC Ramen structure was selected for all the buildings existing in the facility, and the column module was planned to be 400x400.

2) Mech. & Elec. Consultation.

The air conditioning system used radiant floor heating and top discharge F.C.U through the central air conditioning system, and the sanitary system used the booster pump system for water supply and indirect heating system for the hot water supply facility. In addition, a rainwater storage tank was installed as a rainwater storage facility to find ways to utilize rainwater.

2.5 Safety Design

1) Fire Escape.

A direct staircase was installed in the building of the stay area where visitors were staying, and the walking distance for evacuation was planned not to exceed 30m. In addition, the handrails used for stairs and ramps were installed at a height of 1.2m.

2) Barrier Free.

A parking space for the disabled (6 cars) was planned that corresponds to more than 3% of the total parking area and the standard (3.5m x 5.0m). According to the detailed standard drawing for the disabled, the effective floor area was set to be 1.8m in width and 2.0m in depth, and an activity space of 1.4mx1.4m was placed in front in consideration of the wheelchair turning radius. In consideration of the convenience of the disabled, a 13-seater or more elevator was installed, and an activity space of 1.5m x 1.5m was placed in the front.

2.6 Eco-friendly Design

Evaporative cooling occurred using the water space planned as a meditation space to create a sense of comfort, and through this, the overall temperature of the facility is reduced. A wind path is formed through the dispersed mass and corridors. Each mass creates natural ventilation through large windows and folding doors. Planting plants in large and small squares in each area reduces the heat island effect. Solar panels are installed on each roof to generate electricity.

The conclusion

As a result of this study I got the following conclusions:

Through data research, I have drawn the result that most people prefer alone time and space when they are psychologically exhausted, and based on this, I thought that a natural healing environment should be created. Through this project, a complex psychological healing center was planned with the concept of creating a healing environment through ambiguous boundaries, which are non-material spaces. Through this, you can feel the sincerity that instills the belief that you can get peace of mind if you go there for psychological healing, that you can heal a painful place and return to your original life, and make you aware that there is someone beside you and not alone and overcome it. I think that creating an opportunity for natural healing by doing this will be a solution to the social phenomenon that will exist in the present and in the future.
