Студенты, аспиранты, молодые ученые, использующие базу знаний в своей учебе и работе, будут вам очень благодарны.
· You will be expected to be an `active', rather than `passive' learner. You will be given guidance and support but it is your responsibility to read wider and to ask questions. Memorising and repeating won't work as there are no `correct' answers and what you will be assessed on is your ability to create your own argument.
· You will be expected to take notes and ask questions in all sessions as well as take an active part in all group activities. There can be no hiding behind others on a Course such as this.
· You will experience a range of assessment methods on this Course, so be prepared to write essays and reports as well as undertake presentations and examinations. The assessment mechanisms are chosen to be the most appropriate for that module and to prepare you for the expectations of employers. If, for example, you are new to writing reports, make sure that you make full use of our excellent library and on-line resources.
· You will be given, and will be expected to use feedback as part of your development through the Course. This may be in class, individual or group or on-line and you may be required to use and review video work. Be prepared for this, and to act on this feedback in a mature and professional fashion.
· You will be given an account on NOW. You may need to use NOW to access all the details of your module and in some cases to take part in discussion areas. You can even use it for your email. Get in the habit of checking your University email every day as it will be our primary mechanism to contact you.
How should I be using Email
As, managers, you must ensure that you are understood, and that you are sensitive to the likely impact your written communication may have. Knowing how to communicated effectively using different channels is an important communication skill and one that you need to practice. We have put some simple guidance notes together for you.
How can I make sure that I succeed?
A good question! Please read this section carefully. The better that you understand what is expected of you, and what you can expect from the Course, the better chance of success you will have. If you are not clear about any of these points then make sure that you ask one of the team.
· This Course is very likely to be different from your previous educational experience, whether or not you have studied in the UK before, and regardless of whether you have studied in the areas of business and Finance.
· The expectations on you now will be very different. You will need to attend all classes and engage in all activities if you want to succeed. You will need to develop time management skills and a mature approach to learning.
· You have come to learn about the different disciplines that make up this thing called `management', but you will also be taking a critical look at management itself and how we can chart its development. This term `critical' for many of you will be new and we will be dedicating some time to building up your confidence in developing critical thinking.
· Thus the Course is not about repetition of facts or theories, but about you as a learner, developing your own arguments. For many of you this will be a new experience, but an important one that we will guide you through.
· It will not be sufficient to attend classes and just take notes. Instead, you be expected to become an active, rather than a passive learner. This will mean that your tutors will expect you to answer questions and to positively engage with all the tasks that you will be given during the taught sessions.
· You will need to work in groups and also to listen and respond to what happens in those groups. For some students this is the first time that they have engaged in team work and this process can be daunting. To start this process we will provide support for team working throughout the Induction period.
· As you progress through this management development Course you will not only be finding out about the Management discipline and your route specific knowledge, but you will also be finding out about yourself. This is a necessary and important part of the Course.
· To be an effective manager you will need to know where your strengths and your weaknesses lie, and you will need to be self-aware - to understand how you appear to other people, in additional to understanding how you see yourself. One of the most interesting aspects for us is the way in which those who have previously studied the Course have said how much they have changed by the end of the Course.
· This is not an undergraduate course, but a Masters Course at one of the UK's best Business Schools. Masters' Courses are by their nature intensive. And so this is not going to be a holiday. There will be very little time during the year for you to engage in activities outside the Course and you should be prepared for this.
