Annex 1 - Think tanks' websites analysis

To assess the availability of information on the activities of the selected thought factories presented on their official websites, a scale from 0 to 2 was chosen, where 2 means the availability of comprehensive information, 1 means basic information, 0 means no section / subsection.

Criteria for evaluating thought factories based on the completeness of information provided on the official websites of these organizations:

1. About organization

Getting to the site of a certain organization for the first time, the interested person (regardless of status) wants to get a basic idea of ??the chosen organization as quickly as possible. The section "About the Foundation" or "About the Organization" in one form or another is present on all four sites and have similar content.

Evaluation Criteria:

2 - brief information about the history of the organization (date of establishment, major events in the history of the organization), information about the management, information about the main partners, a clear statement of the goals and objectives of the organization.

1 - availability of a brief description of the fund's activities, a small number (or absence) of references to the most popular and large-scale projects, lack of information about the leadership

2. Availability of reports and publications

Availability of published and publicly available research determines the quality of the organization's activities. One of the main tasks of any factory of thought is the development and promotion of research in various fields. Moreover, the availability of a publication makes it possible to more vividly trace the organization of the fund's activities, its areas of activity, and, most importantly, to produce a content analysis of the studies made about proposed practices, decisions and areas of influence.

Evaluation Criteria:

2 - the publication section has many subsections, each contains links to existing reports and studies; all collections, almanacs and publications have brief annotations and descriptions; Most of the publications are available for download in PDF format (or the page contains a link to a third-party resource for free viewing and downloading).

3. Experts

Information about experts employed in the organization can provide comprehensive data on the activities of the organization. Experts working in various fields of social and political sciences, in various organizations, universities and government organizations have a certain reputation in the scientific community, which can be useful in evaluating the activities of a think tank. Unfortunately, the section "Experts" is presented only on the website of the Expert Institute of Social Research. Similar information is presented on the website of the Civil Society Development Fund, however, information about experts is in different sections (no more than 3 names on one page in at least 4 different sections), without indicating their scientific interests and permanent employment. The ISEPI and IEP website does not provide information about experts.

Evaluation Criteria:

2 - availability of the most complete information about the staffing of the organization, areas of scientific interest of employees and the places of their main scientific activities; separate section dedicated to the employees of the organization

4. Announcements of researches and events

The current activity of thought factories in the field of organizing events, lectures and open research meets immediately affects two main functions of think tank - educational and communicative, although indirectly public events and various studies involving outside participants all the typical functions of thought factories are performed at once. Moreover, the agenda of such events or the direction of research sessions serves as very fruitful ground for analyzing the focus of think tanks - political and other actors are actively using similar tools for training and supporters of the desired focus.

Evaluation Criteria:

2 - the section “Events” and / or “Announcements” contains full up-to-date information on upcoming competitions and events, including the timing, main research directions and a program of activities (if known at the time of the announcement); There are reports from past events.

1 - the sections “Announcements” and “Events” are not on the main page; information is distributed on the site in small parts; information about events is outdated or has not been updated for a long time; There are no reports on past events.

5. Relations with Media

The positioning of factories of thought in matters of interaction with the media, if not precisely defined, then to some extent, determine the direction and type of organization.

Evaluation Criteria:

2 - there is a section on the site “Media” or “Press”; provides texts of articles from the media or links to primary sources; the section contains subsections (for example, “media about the foundation” or “media about research”); there is the possibility of sorting news by type, date and publishers.
