Gaming addiction

Abstract

The aim of the article is defining and analyzing the term “Gaming addiction”. In order to achieve the above goal the authors were to define the term “Gaming addiction”, to study types and reasons of the addiction and to analyze possible consequences.

Nowadays computers take great part of our everyday life. We use them for lots of purposes entertainment is only one of them. The internet can provide access to some valuable tools, interesting stories, exciting games and informative content but, when used in excess, the internet has the ability to interfere with work, life, relationships, and daily routines. Playing the occasional video game for fun is typically harmless. Unfortunately, many gamers are tempted to escape reality and become so immersed in their games that this addiction should be considered as a serious disease. Video game addiction is described as an impulse control disorder, which does not involve use of an intoxicating drug and is very similar to pathological gambling. Video game addiction has also been referred to as video game overuse, pathological or compulsive/excessive use of computer games and/or video games. [1]

This new disease affects younger part of the population, mostly adolescents and young adults. However, the disease has nothing to do with the infection, but distributed around the world with the speed of the epidemic.

There are two major types of video games and therefore two major types of video game addictions. Standard video games are generally designed to be played by a single player and involve a clear goal or mission, such as rescuing a princess. The addiction in these games is often related to completing that mission or beating a high score or preset standard.

The other type of video game addiction is associated with online multiplayer games. These games are played online with other people and are especially addictive because they generally have no ending. Gamers with this type of addiction enjoy creating and temporarily becoming an online character. They often build relationships with other online players as an escape from reality. For some, this community may be the place where they feel they are the most accepted.

We should admit that games develop many positive qualities- increase reaction, intelligence, etc. But they are very addictive. One of the main reasons why it happens, however, is that games are designed to be that way. Video game designers, like anyone else are trying to make profit, are always looking for ways to involve more people into their games. They accomplish this by making a game challenging enough to make a person wish getting better results but not so hard for the player to give it up. In other words, success for a gamer is in his virtual achievements. From this point of view, video game addiction is very similar to another more widely recognized disorder: gambling addiction.

People become addicted to the internet for a number of different reasons. Mostly, the urge to compulsive gaming is the result of a desire to manage unpleasant feeling such as depression, anxiety, stress or loneliness. Some feel socially inept in the real world and turn to virtual reality as a means of making their own world where they can be brave, happy or extremely successful, while others may lose themselves online in an effort to temporarily feel better. Like any other addiction, video game addiction has its warning signs. It is important to know how to recognize these signs if you or someone you care about is an avid gamer. These symptoms can be both emotional and physical.

Some of the most common emotional signs or symptoms of video game addiction include: game addiction youth consequences

· Feelings of restlessness and/or irritability when unable to play

· Preoccupation with thoughts of previous online activity or anticipation of the next online session

· Lying to friends or family members regarding the amount of time spent playing

· Isolation from others in order to spend more time gaming

We should also mention some physical signs or symptoms of video game, they are as follows:

· Fatigue

· Migraines due to intense concentration or eye strain

· Carpal tunnel syndrome caused by the overuse of a controller or computer mouse

· Poor personal hygiene - encompasses all of the daily routines that help keep your body clean. This includes regular healthy habits of brushing teeth, washing hair and cleaning body with soap and water, wearing deodorant when possible and keeping clothing clean. When people don't learn these habits, or they become overlooked, certain consequences may develop ranging from social problems to potentially serious diseases.

According to the research made by the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery there are some other warning signs of video game addiction. Scientists recommend to pay attention to use of the game in increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction; repeated, unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back or stop game use; feelings of restlessness, moodiness, depression, or irritability when attempting to cut down use of the game; use of the game is a way to escape from problems or to relieve a dysphoric mood. (e.g. feelings of hopelessness, guilt, anxiety, depression). [2]

In many ways, gaming addiction can be compared to an addiction to drugs or alcohol in that, video games cause a desire to play more and more in order to produce a satisfactory effect. This is similar to the way an alcoholic may need to drink more alcohol in order to feel the benefits of the substance or the way that a drug addict may use more drugs in an effort to produce the same “high.” The addicts struggle to control their behaviors and often experience great despair over their consistent failure to escape their addictive behaviors. A loss of self-esteem and a burning desire to escape can lead the addict further into their addiction sending them into a whirlwind of social problems, relationship failure and emotional pain.

Like any other compulsive disorders, video game addiction can have severe negative consequences. Though most of the symptoms listed above have short-term effects, they can lead to more severe long-term repercussions if not addressed properly. For example, someone addicted to video games will often avoid sleeping or eating proper meals in order to continue gaming. While the short-term effects of this may include hunger and fatigue, it could eventually lead to a sleep disorder or diet-related health issues. Similarly, individuals suffering from any kind of Internet or gaming addiction spend more time in solitary seclusion, spend less time with real people in their lives, and are often viewed as socially awkward, those who isolate themselves from others in order to play video games may miss out on family events, outings with friends, or other events in the short-term. If this continues to be a pattern for a long period of time, however, addicts might find themselves without any friends at all.

Among long-term effects of video game addiction to consider are the financial, academic and occupational consequences involved. Video games and video game equipment can be very expensive, especially when factoring in recurring costs such as the high-speed Internet connection required for online multiplayer games. These games can also be very time-consuming, leaving addicted gamers with less time to focus on their education or career. As a result, this can lead to poor grades at school, problematic entering higher educational establishments and, consequently, jeopardized or risked loss of career opportunities because of game use.
