I think "I have a headache" is more common in America. And "I got a headache" means something different.

Just like "I got a car" means I just purchased/recieved/stolen a car and

"I have a car" would mean exactly what it says.

I think it's weird that when

I read British English it

can be slightly confusing for a second but

I have no trouble understanding it when someone is speaking.?

Hi, Jade. I liked your video, but there are a couple of things I disagree with you about. I am American, born and raised, and I have always heard it said "the government has....", not "the government have...." Also, where I live (Dallas, Texas) I have always heard it referred to as a "diving board." I've never heard anyone call it a "dive board." Just my two cents.?

um... I think perhaps you should stick to explaining brit english. It seems that you may not be qualified to teach on common or colloquial american english. I'm not an (american) english expert, so perhaps the "rules" you explain may be true in some cases, but disagree with many of your examples. Specifically:

1. I have never heard "The government 'have' cut spelling'" (for one thing, the government never cuts spending, j.k.). More likely, "The government has cut spending" or even " The government cut spending" or really, "the government has made spending cuts". weird.

2. If an american says "smelt" he/she is most likely speaking of melting ores or a kind of fish. if one says "smelt" as the past tense of smell it is generally considered poor english. (just like spelling english instead of English)

3. gotten... yeah... Idk. this one irritates me.

6. Of course there are many colloquial differences, but if again, if I hear someone say "I got a car" I might judge a bit. OR i might thing that they just recently acquired a car. Even with "I got to go", might be in certain populations "I gotta go.", but i think more common would be "I've gotta go" haha or even, "I've gotta get going"! :-)

Very good. Better not to talk about Australian English (which is similar in construction, but has a whole plethora of 'new' words. India speaks a lot of English too, but tends to mix it with Hindi/Punjabi/Urdu. This also seems true of Indian broadcasts. Some of the idioms and tenses get mixed up. But - great stuff!?

Hey, American here. I've never heard "have" being used here as you claim we use it..EVER. That whole thing was BS. Ive also never heard anyone say "I've gotten a headache" that doesn't even sound right. And everything from 5 onward was BS. I'm not sure what types of Americans you're speaking to, but none of that was right.. It's as if you pulled this out of your ass to make a point?

Thanks for this video. But as you said in America "Government" is considered as Singular. But you used "Have". As far as my knowledge, Have is used for Plural and Has is used for Singular. So we should use "THE GOVERNMENT HAS CUT SPENDING".

Hi Jade. I'm Dutch and one thing I find weird is the rule when to use the word "that". Now, in my own language this "that" is translated into "dat" and we have to use it all the time. Now, at school I learnt (British English only) whenever "that" can be left out, you really MUST leave it out (and a red mark indicating an error if you did!). But then I saw some English and American use the word "that"....

So what is more correct, both in BE:

"They suggested he should rent a car"

"They suggested THAT he should rent a car"

And when to add the "that" ?

+Aragorn Strider Perhaps it's simply a pet peeve of your teacher. I know of teachers who banned 'like' in the classroom. If you wish to get technical, 'should' generally implies obligation and therefore it would clash with 'suggest' which implies choice. I would word it "They suggested he rent a car". However, remember: it's all about usage, so in California: "They like, suggested he should like, rent a car". London: "They suggested he hire a car". New York: "Take the subway, moron!".?

Basically, the rule on the plural verb depends on whether or not the collective noun is a notional plural: i.e., whether the noun refers to the group as a whole or to its separate individuals.

So it's "the government has..." because here the collective noun refers to the whole, not to the individuals within it.

But if the collective noun refers to the individuals, especially acting separately, then you use the plural ("the couple are vacationing apart").?

Not trying to be mean or anything but the American English is quite wrong in many places. "The government HAS cut spending" is the correct way in AE. Also, we also never say SMELT. We do say BURNT, though as an adjective only. "I've gotten a headache" does not sound right to me either. It's not common. Most people would just say "I had a headache" or "I got a headache" for the past, and "I have a headache" or "I've got a headache" for present. The thing about American English is we don't use the words "have gotten" together often. We usually just use one or the other. For example "I got sick" we rarely say "I have gotten sick".?

In the US, we definitely say "smelled." I believe I've also heard "smelt" as the past tense of "smell," but it's not too common (at least where I'm from, California. It could be a regional difference). That is, unless you mean "to smelt," as in to melt an ore to get its pure metal, or "smelt," the small variety of fish.

So many problems with what you think is American English. We don't say dive board, we say diving board. We may say "I got a car" but it's more slang. Most times we'd say I bought a car, or I purchased a car. I got to go again is more like slang. We say I have to go. Smelt is something you do to iron, we say smelled. I think most times we say dreamed, not dreamt. Gotten is very rarely used. It just sounds ridiculous. Dates are said may ways. The british version is more than acceptable. There are other acceptable ways to say and write dates now as well. 23 August 2015, August 23, 2015 for example. I'm sure your British is correct, but the American is way off. And number 8...the British 2nd version is just wrong.?
