Introduction

electronic language social networks

Since the Internet appeared in every home, life has changed dramatically. It presented huge opportunities, but did it take anything with it? Of all the online resources that allow people to share information, meet new people, always keep up to date with events social networks are the most popular. Social networks have become an integral part of our lives, they open up huge opportunities for communication, for the manifestation of yourself as an individual and in your career.

In today's world social networks are among the most popular phenomena. The number of social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, reach one billion. At the present time, each ad or company has its own event page in Facebook. But why social networks are so common and popular? Why now, when meeting a new person, you can often hear questions: «Are you in facebook?», «Are you in vkontakte?».

Psychologists believe that communication in social networks, such as Twitter, Facebook and vkontakte can be considered a modern form of madness. Experts admit that dependence on social networks is a real problem today, but this may be a plus. Among the problems relating to communication in social networks, there is a problem of «simplification of the language». Electronic communication in them is characterized by high interactivity, speed, because it happens in real time, online. This leads to the loss of literacy in the written communication, since it eliminates the need to follow the rules of spelling and punctuation. As a result, when communicating in social networks with foreigners, which could contribute to learning the language, we study only electronic language, which is likely to be insufficient when communicating in life.

All this determines the relevance of the research topic «Electronic language in social nets - The language of the future?”

The purpose of this work is to describe the specifics of electronic communication in English in social networks.

Objectives:

1. To analyze social networks as a means of communication, their pros and cons;

2. To consider the features of electronic language in social networks;

3. To answer the question whether the language of electronic communication is the language of the future.

The work consists of two chapters, introduction and conclusion, there are applications in the form of graphs and tables.

1. Social Networks

1.1 Reasons for appearance and popularity

For the first time the term "social network" was introduced in 1954 by sociologist James Barnes. However, it should be noted that until 1954, many theorists have expressed an opinion about the importance of considering society as a complex web of relationships between different groups and individuals, that is, from the standpoint of analysis of social networking. In the second half of XX century the concept of "social network" has become very popular among Western scholars of society, in English, this expression has become common.

Thus, a social network is a universal communication system, which is designed to meet the needs for communication, information sharing, and many others.

Now almost everyone knows about social networks on the Internet. Participants of social networks have different age and social status, preferences and tastes, financial and marital status. They are united by one thing - the desire of unlimited communication online. Why did social networks appear?

The reason for the appearance of social communities is the same as the entire Internet, television, radio, telegraph - the need for information. To produce and to consume. Appearance of new networks was due to the increasing role of information in society, and the need to find it quickly.

Today, in the Internet world, the so-called social networks dedicated to the virtual dating and communications are very popular. First of all, users of social nets are attracted by limitless communication. Finding classmates, old friends, joining new interest groups and dating.

Today, there are several networks were the number of users reaches tens of millions. This is such a popular networks, as vkontakte.ru and odnoklassniki.ru, as well as Myspace.com and Facebook.com. Social networking sites are attracting new participants, with each requiring all personal, almost private information, and because many users are registered in multiple social networks, all this increases the dependence of the users on social networks and their vulnerability to other peoples. And for users it is essential not to allow this turn of events and monitor their Internet-style, so that it will not work against them.

Thus social networks are popular and their popularity is a reflection of changes in the society by the beginning of the 21st century. Nevertheless, the future of social networks is very difficult to predict, although in the near future social networks are not going to dissapear and will develop and grow with the increase of the number of internet users. It is not surprising that many experts point along with the positive features of social networks, their negative sides. So it is necessary to consider the pros and cons of social networking.

1.2 Pros and cons of social networking

Positive and negative aspects of social networks can be considered on the basis of different areas according to their functions.

Sphere of communication

Pros. Definitely this point is the main objective of social networks. Friends, acquaintances, relatives are often thousands of miles away, communication with former colleagues stops, and social networks are ideal for keeping in touch. Virtual communication allows us to keep up with events, because a business man hardly has time for weekly telephone calls to all the friends. With these online resources, people can find each other after decades. Also, in social networks you can always meet interesting people with whom you would not have met in real life and even find love.

Cons. Unfortunately, despite the obvious advantages, Internet communication substitutes real communication. Icons and smiles replace facial expressions, emotions, intonation, gestures. Over time, this can lead to negative results. If a person works at home and communicates only through "Facebook" or "Vkontakte", he will come to a point when communicating in life will seem difficult and uncomfortable, and nature has created a man to live among people. Also, many, communicating on the Internet, embellish their qualities, abilities and appearance, creating an ideal image, which is a success. Certainly, then it does not seem appealing to throw off the mask and become a normal person, and it causes serious psychological problems.

Work

Pros. Oddly enough, social networks can be sometimes helpers in the work. First, their opportunities are used by companies to find employees. Bringing people together in interest groups, professions, hobbies, makes it easy to find the right person. Secondly, in social networks you can always communicate with both colleagues and competitors.

Thirdly, many companies choose similar sites to find customers, attract partners, advertise their products.

Cons. There will always be the other side of the coin. In this case it is obvious. If an employee came to work, and first opens his page, during the day not thinking about work, and waiting when his friend appears online, does not go out of the office during lunch, and types constantly… We can only guess how well he does his work. Americans have conducted studies and found that only last year the time spent in virtual communication, increased by 43%.

Interests

Pros. One of the enjoyable moments associated with social networks, is a dialogue with like-minded people. Here you can always share your impressions of the new film, recommend to download the album of an unknown popular band, talk about the pros and cons of a purchase, find a few more people, who like you collect pictures and what not.

Cons. Do not forget that prolonged communication with like-minded can lead to the loss of real friends. Psychologists are increasingly raising the alarm about children who do not know about playing in the yard, and who from morning till night sit at the computer. The researchers focused on the social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and vkontakte and came to the unequivocal conclusion that Internet communication makes people self-centered.

By comparing all the pros and cons of social networking, the main thin is to come to the wise conclusion that all is good in moderation! Social networking - this is just a tool that can make our lives easier in today's fast paced rhythms, but did not make us human, not adapted for life in society. You don't have to depend on social networks, and its rating - on your visit! The activity leads to full immersion. The person becomes completely distracted from the real world which is replaced by the real qualities desired, degradation occurs, and the man becomes increasingly difficult to build connections in the real world.

Key features enjoyed by many users of social networks:

· Engage in community, invite and schedule meetings, keep a diary and use it;

· Keep up with the latest developments of the world, learn interesting facts;

· Place informational messages. It may be information about events, advertising, reports;

· Receive communion in the forums and chat rooms. You can discuss questions, share experiences, impressions, and find new acquaintances;

· Accept and make payments. follow the conduct of operations, check a bank account, get information about your financial condition;

· Access to maps of all countries to make purchases in stores, book tickets and reserve hotel rooms;

· Run business and monitor its progress.

According to psychologists about social networks.

Psychologists say that social networks only create the illusion of communication, but actually it leads us away from reality. In the book, "Alone Together" MIT professor Sherry Turkle argues that the now-familiar behavior is actually a sign of serious pathology.

People become isolated from reality because of the social networks as technology take precedence over human, says the professor. Is replaced by normal human interaction relationships in the cyber-reality, which is a pathetic imitation of this world.

Having examined the social networks in terms of their pros and cons,we should consider types of social networks.

1.3 Classification

In addition to communication, there are social nets of certain character, in which people can share specific information with one another.

Such networks can be divided into classes and subclasses.

1. By the type:

· To search for people (odnoklassniki.ru)

· For entertainment (Vkontakte)

· For works and business (moikrug)

· For information (news2.ru)

· For bookmarks (БобрДобр)

· For video (YouTube)

· For audio (Last.fm)

· For photos (FiXX.RU)

2. By the openness of information

· Open (FaceBook)

· Mixed(pro2)

· Closed (PlayboyU.com)

3. By the Geographical coverage

· World(MySpace)

Most networks are currently open, but there are closed ones where people get by invitation only. Closed networks are just beginning to emerge, but we can expect their popularity in a few years.

The number of users is growing every day, and it is impossible to imagine what will happen in the near future. I wonder which way this huge part of the Internet will evolve? What are the new "chips" which the developers will come up with to attract people to their resources? However,for developers it is very important to protect their resource from hackers, so they restrict access to network. So, this is due not only to the number of users, but also with much number of hackers who crack into pages in order to distribute their information.

One way to distinguish between a hacker is a style of writing messages. We can easily identify, if it is our friend or a third person who writes us, for example, by the manner of his writing. Although now it is difficult to determine because the language of electronic communication becomes uniform, because for the sake of simplicity and speed, users do not follow all the rules that are the norm in this or that language. New rules appear - the rules of electronic language

2. The language of electronic communication

2.1 Features of electronic communication, rules or their lack

«-Hello QT!;

-Hi dear, GTSY));

-Me too) how R U?

-I'm fine and U? AFAIK U recently returned from voyages?

-Yes, FYI in this traveling, I found myself F2F with a huge monkey :D

-OMG LOL :D

-Sorry I GTG CUL8R)

-K. Go back ASAP)»

Will every person who knows the English language understand this dialogue? He who sits in the social networks will easily understand the message, because there is a system of signs, which is commonly used in electronic communication. Can not say that all write in that language, especially in the case of the older generation, who used to write messages in the network as in the regular mail correspondence.

The most common mistake made in the correspondence is the inability to use the mechanism of quoting the original message. Most Internet users write responses to emails as well as to ordinary paper ones using a solid text. Often people just read an original letter and write their response upon reading the original. This approach, apart from the unnatural structure of the message leads to distortion and loss of meaning, and often makes interlocutors re-read his the same old letters, to clarify - what is a conversation. This error is allowed in an email as well as when communicating in real time in social networks.

One problem with communicating in social networks - is the lack of punctuation (except the fullstop), the absence of any rules in writing. This causes a problem of modern society - the loss of value of the language, and in the end - writing a text in normal daily life in the same way.

Another problem, due to which people sometimes do not understand what tone a letter is written in is the lack of expression of emotions. You have to resort to some methods to "revive" your electronic communication through symbols that denote emotions or emoticons - "smiles". These icons are made of conventional punctuation marks, so that by bowing the head to the left, you could see some sort of smiley face, which shows the facial expression and intonation, which would be delivered to the previous sentence or word:

:-) just a smile or a humorous tone

;-) ironic smile, a sly tone

:-( sadness, sorrow, regret

;-( humorous sadness, smile through the tears

:-< reproachful shade

:-P humorous tone (protruding tongue)

:-O surprised tone (open mouth)

:-* kissed

Some people believe that an icon smile is always a means that the above sad is a joke and it should not be taken seriously. In fact, the symbol will not have such a clear meaning - it simply means good-natured expression and intonation.

However, in many social networks there are no smiles (in such networks as Vkontakte and Facebook). Often, when communicating because of misunderstanding of each other there are quarrels and conflicts. And it is all because one person does not understand the intonation of the phrase written by his friend, because of the lack of emotions expression.

You should not be shy to denote your emotions and tone of the letters - it enlivens the correspondence much, and with sufficient skill, you can vividly imagine the emotions of the interlocutor, as well as easily express your own.

For most people who have experience in networking, the text symbol without much emotion is perceived as more arid, and they subconsciously try to ascribe to it a particular emotional background, which may not always be guessed correctly. Therefore, if a person wants to be understood correctly -symbols should be used in moderation and timely.

If you are new to online communication with foreigners, you may not know the abbreviations in this communion, and you will not understand what the other person is going to say. To avoid this, we present a list of most used shortcuts. This is especially useful when communicating in chat rooms, where there is no time to search for transcripts:

ADDY - Address - Адрес;

AFK - Away From Keyboard - Отошел от клавиатуры;

B4 - Before - Раньше;

BBL - Be Back Later - Скоро вернусь;

BRB - Be right back - сейчас вернусь;

BTW - By the way - между прочим;

CU - See You - До скорого;

GTG - Got to Go - Мне пора;

GTSY - Good to See You - Рад тебя видеть;

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

NP - No Problem

HAGN - Have a Good Night - Доброй ночи;

ILU - I Love You - Я люблю тебя;

IMHO - In My Humble Opinion - По моему скромному мнению;

IRL - In Real Life - В реале;

LOL - Laugh Out Loud - Lots of Laughter - Очень смешно;

NP - No Problem - нет проблем;

OMG - Oh my God - боже мой;

PLZ, PLS - Please - Пожалуйста;

ROFL - Rolling on the floor laughing - Катаюсь по полу со смеха;

SYS - See You Soon - До скорого;

THX - Thanks - Спасибо;

Knowing these reductions, we can quickly write a message, but one can often hear these cuts when communicating in life, often with young people. Young people and teenagers have a certain language that is difficult to understand for a stranger. We are talking about certain expressions and words. This allows them to speak publicly, but understandably only "for themselfs." Moreover, experts note that in any youth sentence there is a hidden meaning, whether it is a particular brand, or event, or about something else.

And these young codes come from social networks. But social networks can also influence the language which we use in everyday communication.

2.2 “Electronic language in social nets - The language of the future?”

Language of electronic communication at the moment is not a norm. Can we assume that in future it will be so? If yes, is it good or bad?

We are unable to influence the fact that social nets are developing more and more, and probably in the future they will become an intergral part of our life both private and professional. The fastness of using the language of electronic communication is, undoubtedly, an advantage. Therefore, we can assume that he will become the norm at sublanguage, but if it happens I would like this to no impact on the cultural level of verbal communication and culture in general.

I conducted a poll on the topic: "Do you think, social networks take much of your time?” 52 people responded to the survey, 38 of whom answered "yes." Another poll was connected with literacy in communication: "Do you observe the norms of communication, spelling words and punctuation?" In this poll were involved 78 people, 48 of whom answered "no", and the rest answered that they comply with the rules depending on the interlocutor. From these surveys we can conclude that people are sitting at the computer for a long time in social networks, and thus they are "working on" technology an illiterate communication that affects their linguistic etiquette.

Moreover, I happened to chat with man from England on Facebook. He has printed 3 times faster than me, but not due to hand sleight, and because of the fact that more than half of the sentences were reduced by him. I knew not all the reductions, only a small part, so it was difficult to read his letters. And that means for any new user to the network it would be even harder to communicate without knowing all the abbreviations that are commonly used when sending emails.

Conclusion

The aim of my research was to study the problem of communication in social networks - the problem of "simplifying the language." It is very urgent at present time, because after the social networking has appeared, people began to spend much time in it, communicating online. The consequence of this communication is that a user, trying to respond quickly to his interlocutor, does not pay much attention to punctuation, and spelling to literacy. The spelling is spoilt , and the culture of the language diminishes. To answer the question: will the language of electronic communication become a norm of a verbal dialogue in real life, I conducted research in the form of surveys, compared all the positive and negative aspects of social networking, corresponded with a foreigner online, in order to make sure that the problem really exists.

Watching how moderns teenagers, adults and even elderly people communicate with each other and reading the literature on the subject have allowed to come to a conclusion that at present the majority of people who have a page in a social network (up to 30 years), using of various reductions in the communications, do not follow the rules of writing. A new generation grows up, and now every other student has a Vkontakte page. Speaking in the network, the teenagers learn this principle of "simplified" communication, which is laid at an early age. It means, we can certainly say that such a "reduced" form of communication will affect the rights in the future and eventually may become the norm in the language in real life.

Thus, this problem is relevant in our time. However, it is important to remember that using abbreviations and often disregarding punctuation and spelling rules, it is necessary to distinguish between "electronic communication" and communication in real life and to realize that you can not go on about "simplicity" of the language during a conversation online, so that it hasn't affected the culture of language in general.

«Good afternoon, let me present my research to U on the topic: «Electronic language in social networks - the language of the future?»

(1)Since the Internet appeared in every home, life has changed dramatically. It presented huge opportunities, but did it take anything with it?
