Promotion of reading in European countries

Reading as one of the types of speech activity, the process of perception and understanding of written text. Increasing the intellectual level in the process of reading, the formation of values, the development of creative and cognitive abilities.

Promotion of reading in European countries

Reading is one of the types of speech activity, the process of perceiving and understanding written text. It is an important development factor, raises the intellectual level, forms life orientations, norms and values, contributes to the development of creativity, cognitive skills and the expansion of worldview, helps integration into the social and cultural environment.

Reading is now seen as an important part of the lifelong learning process, and therefore as a changing set of knowledge, skills and strategies that a person develops through interaction with others and society in general.

With the development of technologies, reading paper publications recedes into the background, but the significance of the influence of reading does not disappear, so it is worth promoting its popularization. The promotion of reading is important for the development of culture and education, it is implemented using such methods as the promotion of books and literary works, organization of literary events, including book clubs, literary festivals and evenings, reading in public places, access to libraries and bookstores, use of the latest technologies, promotion of reading in mass media and social networks, etc.

European countries are conducting activities aimed at creating incentives for reading, supporting book culture and promoting the development of the literary community in the EU. This includes book fairs and festivals that attract authors, publishers and readers, as well as the organization of forums, exhibitions and cooperation between publishers and bookstores with readers, as well as the creation of library hubs.

In Italy, a book support institute was established under the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Activities, which made it possible to develop the exhibition and fair direction and promote Italian books abroad. In addition, literary festival activities are popular in the country, almost every province has its own literary festival: The International Book Fair in Turin, the Fair of Small and Medium Publishers “More Books - More Freedom” in Rome, Festival of Literature in Mantua, Festival in the city of Lucca, The International Festival of Poetry in Genoa and the International Festival in the city of Ferrara. These events contribute to popularization of the book and creating a platform for discussing literature.

Many European countries focus on educating young readers, hoping to develop and consolidate a love of reading from an early age and to have readers with a lifelong interest in literature. For example, the British “Book Start” program has national status and is financed from the state budget with the support of commercial partners. It brings together various institutions, such as libraries, medical facilities, government bodies, publishers, local education authorities, and covers more than 90% of families with young children: now every child between the ages of one and three years receives three sets of books with recommendations for parents.

Croatian campaign “Read to me!” involves librarians and pediatricians in popularizing reading among children. As part of this campaign, its participants inform adults about the importance and benefits of reading to children. They also help to select literature according to the age of the children and involve Croatian celebrities. In addition, the initiative delivers books to young readers in remote places with the help of special transport.

Every year in the Czech Republic and Germany, an action is held, which is aimed at popularizing reading aloud for children and young people with the aim of forming a love for books from childhood, and reading is popularized as a source of pleasure. In French schools, there is an educational program that aims to get children reading and away from the Internet. In addition, book festivals are regularly held in the country, such as the Festival du Livre de Paris - the largest book festival that brings together authors, publishers and readers from all over the world.

In Poland, it is planned to turn libraries into cultural hubs, provide kindergartens with modern literature, regularly conduct campaigns to promote reading and organize large-scale literary events.

Denmark has focused on electronic book publishing, because it is cheap and convenient. This has resulted in a number of free educational publications, such as e-textbooks from Bookboon, published in many languages: English, German, Dutch, Danish, French, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Spanish and Czech.

Norway focuses on creating conditions for comfortable reading, the country's libraries are as popular as cinemas, playgrounds and pubs. The state program “Cultural backpack” is aimed at introducing elementary and secondary school students to all kinds of arts, including literature.

So, we can conclude that European countries are successfully implementing measures, campaigns and programs aimed at popularizing reading and supporting book culture. Book fairs and festivals help develop book culture and create a platform for the dissemination and discussion of literature. The organization of various national book events stimulates the spread of reading, contributing to the education of educated civic consciousness. Reading programs for children and youth are an important priority in many countries, and it is worth learning from their experience in implementing new forms of reading promotion.
